In the spirit of vinyl 45s that are now sought-after collectibles from generations past, Chris Brecht has created 45. It may be a testament to a lost time. The record is grounded in 1960’s rock and roll instrumentation and is sonically, part country, part vintage R&R and the rest is poetry. Chris Brecht’s songwriting, guitar and harmonica seep through the dust.
45 is a full band release, produced and accompanied on lead guitar by Brad Rice (Ryan Adams, The Backsliders, Whiskeytown, Tift Merritt, and the “revamped” Son Volt) who in recent months has been joining Chris on stage. The two song effort was engineered by Sam Seifert of Asleep at the Wheel. The rest of the band includes Matt Mollica (Hammond B3 Organ), Bobby Daniel (bass) and Nina Singh (drums / percussion).
Both tracks on 45 were cut live in the studio. Chris’ approach is simple: live band studio recording, just like the recordings he grew up listening to by Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, and the Rolling Stones. Set out to capture that “in the moment” sound, 45 ventures into territory of its own: lyrically, musically and spontaneously.
Night Highway 99 is an alt-country stargazer that references Gary Snyder’s 1956 poem, “Night Highway Ninety-Nine.” The song even begins with the first stanza of verse from Snyder’s poem to open a dialogue with the restlessness of beat culture. I Played Cards with the Devil is a driven alternative country song. Sounding like the Rolling Stones with the rhythm of a train, card playing is an elusive metaphor and wandering backdrop to this song that exists within the curse of sense and memory. “…a cross between, Charles Johnson, Neil Young, Frederick Nietzsche, and a tarot deck.” – Chris Merrill
