Chaski
Chaski [CHAH-ski] means “messenger” in the Incan language of Quechua [KECH-wah]. In the spirit of this Andean traveler, Chaski bring to its audiences music from Latin America, incorporating colorful costumes, traditional dances, cultural and historical insight, audience participation, and musical demonstrations. Chaski has performed together since 1985 and has toured Texas, New Mexico, Arkansas, California, Washington DC, England, Scotland, Costa Rica, and Venezuela and the auspices of Texas Commission on the Arts, the Heartland Arts Fund, and other generous sponsors of the arts. Five independently produced recordings, Chaski (1989), Pacha Mama (1991), El sariri (1995), Unay (2000), and Viracocha (2006) feature selections from Chaski’s repertoire on flute, zampoñas (panpipes), quena, transverse flute, concert harp, cuatro, guitar, charango, bombo, maracas and other instruments.
Chaski began performing classical flute and harp music in April of 1985. Venezuelan songs that Adrienne’s mother had brought from her homeland gradually made their way into Chaski’s repertoire. Shana and Adrienne joined the University of Texas at Austin Brazilian and Andean Music Ensembles to learn more about depth and variety of Latin American music. The success of their expanded repertoire led them to welcome guitarist Dan Dickey into the group in about 1991.
Adrienne Inglis received a Bachelor of Music in Flute at Lewis and Clark College and a Master of Music in Flute at the University of Texas at Austin and has studied with Scott Goff, Karl Kraber, and Bolivian zampoñero Fernando Jiménez. In 1992 she graduated with highest honors with a bachelor''s degree in chemical engineering from UT Austin. She teaches flute at Southwestern University, played flute with the Wild Basin Winds, served as principal flute with the Mid-Texas Symphony for many years. She recently recorded on the SpyKids 2 orchestral soundtrack with the Texas Philharmonic, playing flute, piccolo, alto flute, and bass flute and on the Kill Bill: Vol. 2 soundtrack playing alto flute, tarka and quenacho.
Shana Norton graduated with highest honors earning a Bachelor of Music Education from Abilene Christian University and attended the Eastman School of Music, studying with Julia Hermann Edwards and Eileen Malone. In 1995 she graduated from The Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs with a Master of Public Affairs degree. She plays principal harp with the Mid-Texas Symphony and works for CAMPO and performs frequently with the San Antonio Symphony.
Dan Dickey earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish and a Master of Arts degree in American Studies and Folklore from the University of Texas at Austin. For many years he led the University of Texas at Austin Andean Music Ensemble and Mariachi. He teaches Spanish at St. Andrew''s Episcopal School, performs with Los Romanceros, and writes educational materials. Magnificat
Magnificat is an all-women chorus which was founded in Austin in 1998 to explore and perform the rich diversity of choral music from the last five centuries. The choir takes its name from Mary''s canticle in St Luke''s Gospel, the Magnificat: My soul doth magnify the Lord and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. This reflects the spirit of the music that has been a part of the musical education of many of the singers and establishes the vocal ensemble''s particular interest in sacred choral music. The chorus offers an eclectic repertoire of music written for women’s voices and performed at the highest standards. The choir ranges in number from eight to twenty voices and performs a wide repertoire of music that embraces the whole span of church music, from Gregorian chant to the present day. Representing a diversity of worship styles, Magnificat brings together a ecumenical group of women dedicated to preserving traditional and sacred liturgical music. Deeply rooted in spirituality, the women of Magnificat use their unified voices to bring scripture to life and transform a liturgy by bringing life to the art of women’s vocal performance with as much joy and enthusiasm as they do grace and style.

In the Andean region (now countries of Venezuela in the north to Chile and Argentina in the south) for hundreds, even thousands of years Huiracocha or Viracocha has been the Lord, God, invisible, eternal, all-powerful, the supreme creator. His dwelling was not in the world above, in the world below, nor on the earth itself. He transcended the three spheres. Misa Trinitaria and the other spiritual pieces on this new Chaski recording blend ancient and continuing Andean traditions, using song and traditional instruments to revere and praise Viracocha—the Lord, God, creator of all, with the hundreds of years of tradition celebrating “el Dios del universo” in the music of the Spanish-Christian mass. Viracocha Disguised as a Beggar
"Legends of the Aymara Indians say that the Creator God Viracocha rose from Lake Titicaca during the time of darkness to bring forth light. Viracocha was a storm god and a sun god who was represented as wearing the sun for a crown, with thunderbolts in his hands, and tears descending from his eyes as rain. He wandered the earth disguised as a beggar and wept when he saw the plight of the creatures he had created, but knew that he must sustain them. Viracocha made the earth, the stars, the sky and mankind, but his first creation displeased him, so he destroyed it with a flood and made a new, better one, taking to his wanderings as a beggar, teaching his new creations the rudiments of civilization, as well as working numerous miracles. Viracocha eventually disappeared across the Pacific Ocean (by walking on the water), setting off near Manta Ecuador, and never returned. It was thought that Viracocha would re-appear in times of trouble.
