FOLK: Traditional Folk, EASY LISTENING: Background Music
I am not a performer by nature. I think of myself primarily as a songwriter. My favorite way to spend a day is with my family and friends in a certain secluded spot in eastern Washington, where I can hope to see blue sky, and maybe catch sight of some wildlife. These songs are gifts that came to me as a result of time spent there and other places like it.
The folky, acoustic, almost-country-but-not-really feel of my music is a direct result of the influence of my guitar-playing father. There were many varieties of musical styles represented in our home in Michigan as I was growing up, but my earliest memories are of Johnny Cash, Porter Wagoner, and Arlo Guthrie. Later influences included Judy Collins, Joan Baez, and Gordon Lightfoot. It was from these sources that I learned to appreciate simple music with meaningful lyrics. My mother''s enjoyment of the music of Ray Charles and Lou Rawls added earthier, more soulful inspirations. My current list of favorite artists includes Mindy Smith, David Wlicox, Bruce Cockburn, and Nanci Griffith. And as far back as I can remember, I have always loved to sing the hymns and praise songs of the Christian faith.
So it is not surprising that when I began to write my own songs I found myself returning to my musical roots. What might be surprising to those who know me is that I have taken the steps to create this CD, cave dweller that I tend to be. In fact, I''m a little surprised by it myself! But I believe that the gifts we are given carry with them an implied obligation to share them with others. So I am called out of comfortable seclusion to share them with you.
It''s my hope that in listening to them you''ll be able to hear past me and catch a hint of the true source of every good and perfect gift.
