History

Defying Belief is an acoustic rock band (for lack of a better description) out of Greensboro, NC Ryan and Andrew that began as an acoustic duo in 2003 with Ryan O’Callaghan and Andrew Henderson both songwriting and playing acoustic guitar. In the fall of 2004 the duo, looking to acquire a fuller sound, added John Tomasevich and Alex Johns, bass player and drummer respectively, to the line up. The resulting sound was a mix of alternative rock, jazz, and pop, which has become a trademark sound of the band. Especially prominent is the intricate guitar work, melodic 3-part vocals, and the use of horns on many songs. The band went into the studio to record a demo after only 2 practices, and the 5-song EP “Tears of a Nation” was the product. The band played many shows around the state but in the fall of 2005 Alex left to pursue other interests. The band immediately replaced Alex with Jack Foster and picked up where they left off. Continuing to play shows around NC, the band began work on their first full length.

Having gone into the studio in the fall of 2006, the band will release their first LP DB @ Somewhere Else Tavern entitled “Epiphany” in April of 2007, an album whose sound is distinctly Defying Belief’s. Over the past 4 years, the band has received many positive reviews and has frequented such venues as Greene Street (Greensboro), Cat’s Cradle (Carrboro), The Brewery (Raleigh) and Legends (Boone). They have headlined many shows and have opened for such bands as Corey Smith, Paulson (NJ), and Daphne Loves Derby (WA).
What are we all about?

Well, the first place to begin would definately have to be the name. What exactly does Defying Belief mean? The name came to us in our challenge to find something that describes the kind of music we play as well as the message we want to get across.

The actual name Defying Belief can be explained as a representation of specific beliefs or sets of values that stand out from those of society or those which would be considered "the norm." We believe that everyone has a right to speak his or her mind and that those who have ideas that can change the world for the better, even the smallest bit, have a responsibility to share them.

The name also refers to our general dislike with the way that society as a whole seems to cling to beliefs that are given to them by their parents, the media, and political figures without really even thinking about what''s going on and what can be done to change things for the better. We offer our opinions of what we think is really going on in the world: what''s right, what''s wrong, and what could be made better. Awareness is key as change cannot be enacted unless people are active. At the same time, we want to emphasize that life is what you make of it and that dwelling on the negative isn''t going to solve anything. We try and promote having fun and enjoying life by making the most of it. From this, Defying Belief has been derived.

The mission is simple: to play original, innovative, heartfelt music in an attempt to express ideas and observations on life as seen by the musicians and trying to do something that people will absolutely love.
