Bio: Drive By Wire operates from the sultry town Deventer, consisting of three members; Simone Holsbeek-vocals &guitar ( ex-Cords, ex-Telefunk) , Alwin Wubben- low-down-dirty-guitar & slide, and Remco Cornelissen ( ex- Incense) beating the shit out of the drums. ( for the recordings of our debutalbum, Hans Rutten from The Gathering took place behind the drum-kit). A throat, 2 guitars ( one taking care of the screaming highs the other of the hoovering dirty lows) a set of drums and a bottle of single malt whisky is all they need to rock. So how would it sound if you put Limp Biskit, the Carpenters and Madonna in a rehearsal room jammin together? Well it sure as hell won''t sound as Drive By Wire. A beaten up 69 Dodge Challenger doing 160 through the smouldering desert towards an raging thunderstorm with Chris Goss at the steering wheel and The Stooges kicking it with P.J. Harvey on the backseat, would be the best possible description of the Drive By Wire sound. Hell yeah!

The Netherlands are filled with windmills, wooden shoes, and of course psychedelic stoner rock. Drive by Wire mixes distorted guitars and haunting female melodies to make for an enjoyable listen.
At first listen DBW have a very strong Sonic Youth sound. This may be in part to lead vocalist Simone Holsbeek''s monotone Kim Gordon-esque delivery. But as the album unravels itself more and more, it reminds me of Queens of the Stone Age smoking way too much refer. This is not a bad thing; overall the album has a very haunting feeling. Depressing, slow riffs abound on this nice slab of Dutch alt rock.
So, feel free to listen to sadness drenched grooves from this female led group. I really doubt you will be disappointed.

I really enjoyed the music of Holland’s Drive By Wire. The fact is that I often caught myself unable to focus on the review writing because the CD was still on my player and the music was filling the room. But the review has to be finished, because I am sure that there are a lot of people out there still unaware of this great band that features the drummer of “The Gathering”, Hans Rutten in the line up. Mentioning “The Gathering” it would be a good idea to use their music –Nighttime Birds album period-as a starting point in here, but it is only a starting point do not expect a The Gathering-clone band because things here are a little more different and complex. Drive By Wire offers a melodic mixture of Acid Rock stuff with atmospheric musical touches, 70s Heavy Rock inspired guitar riffing and a wonderful female voice by Simone Holsbeek. Mentioning female vocals I would add that Anneke Van Giersbergen (The Gathering) participates in three tracks offering her beautiful voice to the listeners. The journey has already started and the listener follows magnetized… Ten songs in total included in this magnificent CD, keep on listening and you will discover little musical touches influenced by bands like Velvet Underground and Sonic Youth. The final musical puzzle full of emotions belongs to Drive By Wire, a unique, strange and beautiful result and the listener wants to break the puzzle again into thousand pieces just to be able to re-collect the pieces and re-create it during a new musical journey. A must buy.

Holland should be considered as the homeland of stoner rock! You may not find there the desert of the U.S. but it has other ways to make the local bands to fill their music with guitar and slide and create albums that will mentally travel you to an underground bar where you get wasted in a thick cloud of smoke and tones of alcohol, thinking of your life problems
Enough with my mind-tripping because reality is more interesting and it''s called Drive By Wire!
The three-member band from Holland is Simone Holsbeek (vocals & guitars) (ex- Telefunk and ex-Cords), Alwin Wubben (guitar) and Rob Snijders (drums) whom the olders may remember from the underestimated Celestial Season. The last one doesn''t took part at this debut album and Hans Rutten of The Gathering took care of the drums. The participation of their compatriots doesn''t stop here ''cause their singer Anneke Van Giersbergen is doing the back or lead vocals in a couple of songs.
What''s so special about Drive By Wire? The best thing in their album is that you can listen to it from the beginning to the end without getting even a bit tired or bored. That''s because of the variety of their songwriting. From the blues of "Brand new woman" to the post explosions of "Happiness is dangerous" and from the trippy "Hengistbury road" to the, born to be a hit, "TAR".
The band''s influences are recognisable but without getting annoying. The emotional anger of PJ Harvey, Iggy Pop''s rage, the grunge-stoner riffs of the Queens of the stone age and of course above all the huge legacy of Kyuss
Big attention should be paid to Simone''s lyrics and passionate performance.
Drive By Wire really touched me in a deep degree. I would do or give anything to see them live as soon as possible. A famous author has written in one of his best-seller books "When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it" That''s bullshit!!! Nothing will come true unless you go for it on your own. So, check ''em out, listen to their music and finally get yourself Drive By Wire''s album…

Stoner rock with female sensitivity
A new Dutch band with members not so new in the field presents its first work. Drive by Wire belong to stoner rock, that is, a field that has before long saturated musically and looks almost desperately to disengage itself from its standards and spread to other musical paths, keeping of course the distinctive feel of the genre.
Their musical background (Simone Holsbeek - voice, guitar once played in alternative rockers Cords and the more experimental Telefunk) did not allow them to create something standardized. Of course we cannot neglect the obvious influence by legendary groups such as Kyuss and the Stooges (they have also covered TV Eye of the latter in a live show) in guitar riffs and song structure mentality, but Drive By Wire offer something more that that: feeling and female sensitivity. The first thing the listener of the album notices is the female vocals. Contrary to the vast majority of albums in the genre, you will hear neither grinding male voices soaked in alcohol and hallucinatory drugs, nor even angry descendants of riot grrrls. Simones voice is soft, sweet and sensitive, and emits femininity. Lyrically also, the album is surrounded by a cyclothymic scent that reminds us of the women who make our lives spicier without them never pursuing that. On the one hand, Simone is driven by her personal experiences to sing of loss and pessimism (typical example is The Morning May Never Come), but at the same time she leaves a light pass through a crack ("I know you''ll always be around", she mumbles in Windswept) and shows that she can get on with her life stronger (A Brand New Woman). In the sentimentally intense climate of the album also help the vocals of Anneke van Giersbergen from their compatriots The Gathering, either by (mainly) assuming a backup role or by taking up the lead. Especially in Happiness Is Dangerous she hands out an extremely passionate performance.
Maybe the above description puts off stoner rock friends, but it shouldnt, since the group rocks and does it convincingly. Just listening to bully/macho Dirt with the distinctive slide guitar by Alwin Wubben is enough to prove these words. Another special thing about their sound is that in very few tracks you can hear the palpitating sound of bass guitar, since by choice the group does not have a standard bass player. But in the end, double guitars (one of which is tuned lower like a bass) ensure the essential thickness. Musically, when they dont follow the stoner rock heritage, they expand to bluesier trips, while in songs like Hengistbury Road they try to even paint atmospheric post rock soundscapes. The album finishes as it started: with a riff guaranteeing the smooth repeat of the listening. A live show of theirs should be of much interest. It should be noted that all members of The Gathering have contributed as guests in the final result, while drummer Hans Rutten is referred to as a normal member of Drive by Wire. Now Rob Snijders (ex-Celestial Season) has taken up his rhythmic duties.
Finally, the album (which is contained in a simple and beautiful digipack) is wholeheartedly recommended to those who look for a different feel in heavy rock of the (here Dutch) desert, and to those who use music mainly to inspire feelings.

I still find myself spinning this album over and over. It''s been a very long time since the last time I have come across an album with such a staying power and strangely enough it''s still not letting up. While listening I can''t help but move into this, I need more and more to amplify its ultimate potent emotion. It takes zero effort to listen to it all the way through and then do it again!! Within each listen I found this contagious album reaching deep into my limbic system. This release for its genre is almost the perfect record. Simone is back and just in time I might add!
Setting the sentimental factor aside, the fuming stoner rock dominates their release with a sound which is as dirty as it should get. A throat, 2 guitars and a set of drums is all they need to rock. However, at the same time the mood feels so dark, trippy and sexy. Maybe this is due to the all-female vocals either with Simone leading or with special guest Anneke van Giersbergen (The Gathering) supporting, whispering or even taking the lead in tracks like the aptly named Happiness Is Dangerous or the masterpiece Tullamore Dew. Simone''s and Annie''s voices blend damn well together. All other The Gathering members lend a hand since Drive By Wire was mainly a two-piece (new member on the drums is Rob Snijders (Anneke'' s husband). Generally, the songs are all similarly strong, staying rather dark, groovy and atmospheric but exploring a style that is somewhat unique and different on every song. One thing that might appeal to more melancholically-oriented audiences, is that by listening to it you can feel the sorrow of loss in Simone''s lyrics (Windswept: "Be around, be around, I know you''re always, I feel you''re always, be around") but the same time you can see an optimistic point of view spread through out the lyrics ("Don''t look behind"..)
If I was asked to point out one weakness on his album I really don''t think I could. If you like this style of music, Drive By Wire is going to please you for sure! This band is really worthy of your attention. This disc basically demands a spot in your CD collection. Should you need some more convincing however, just visit their official website where you can download three (!) songs. Just remember that you have to listen to it really loud. And be sure to checkthem out if they support TG in the forthcoming tour to Greece, if and when this happens!
