Details:
"Sugar Mountain" is a collection of original compositions that are simple, dynamic, and executed with refreshing creativity. It is the first recording by the group, but the playing on display is both cohesive and confident. Instead of taking on a traditional approach, pianist Jon Coyle often improvises in a way that sidesteps the idea of "soloing." Much of the spontaneous playing on "Sugar Mountain" adds to the textural and compositional whole of the group''s sound. Bassist Chris Coyle and drummer Matt Scarano both offer great, solid musicianship, and pay much attention to the subtleties of the music. Without a doubt, this recording captures music that is full of new ideas and emotional honesty.

Games was formed in the fall of 2006, and features a dynamic combination of twin action (Jon and Chris Coyle are fraternals, piano and bass) and silky percussive action (Matt Scarano is a silky drummer). Based in Philadelphia, the band enjoys making fresh noises, playing originals, and vamping on many of today''s highly-loved favorites.

Jon and Chris Coyle grew up playing music together and constantly bickering with each other over twin issues. Both took up piano at age 6, but by the time they were in their teens Chris had moved on to the upright bass. As their love for music grew, the styles of jazz and pop became essential inspirations. They gained interest in composing and arranging, and also developed an appreciation for improvisation and spontaneity. By the time they were in middle school, they began playing in school jazz groups, and at many private events and local venues. The brotherly fun hasn’t halted since. Jon and Chris have performed at a whole slew of Philadelphia-area spots (including Chris’ Jazz Café, Chaplin’s, Steel City Coffeehouse, and World Café Live), playing both as sidemen and also in their own group. They love to explore their own compositions, but also cover many songs from some of today’s most popular and unique artists, ranging from David Bowie, to Aphex Twin, to Sigur Rós.

Matt Scarano has been making a name for himself as a talented up and coming drummer. He hails from Wilmington, Delaware and performs regularly in the Philadelphia area with various groups ranging from singer/songwriter to jazz. His drumming can be heard on Nate Farrar’s Shell Shocked (bWo Records) and Josh Olmstead’s Charms (One Little Indian Records). He has opened for Ari Hoenig and Derek Trucks Band while touring with Johnny Neel of Gov’t Mule and The Allman Brothers Band. He is also a member of Ben Schachter’s Cephalopod and https://www.tradebit.com.
