Details:
Grackle is the name of the psychedelic duo of long time friends, collaborators and conspirators, Gene Tangren and Mike Nehl. Mike and Gene (aka Hackle & Jackal) spent many of their formative years growing up literally across the street from each other. Because of this proximity it was only natural for them to influence (corrupt?) the thought processes of the other. They fed off each other’s quirks and idiosyncrasies for many years and delighted often in trying to out-do each other in matters of eccentric behavior and peculiar mental machinations.

Years later this inclination to try to surpass one another’s madness continued. Shortly after Y2K, the two friends (who live 600 miles apart and can only see each other in person about four times per year) began sharing bizarre and psychedelic music that they had each discovered between their visits. At their meetings they would each don headphones (with the help of a Y-splitter) and listen to what the other had brought to the table. Often they would sit laughing uncontrollably late into the night due to the absurdity/brilliance of the music that they were hearing.

It was during one such episode that Gene (Jackal) noted that he had no idea that bands were doing such amazingly strange stuff (and getting away with it!). He suggested that Mike (Hackle) and he could come up with music that was just as outlandish. Hackle agreed, but observed that even the most far-out bands that they had been sampling tended to employ fairly traditional percussion and drums. Hackle promptly ran to the kitchen and fished out a set of stainless steel mixing bowls. Grabbing a toy drumstick, he proceeded to put on a solo show for Jackal to demonstrate his point.

This went on for about a half an hour with Jackal laughing so hard that he was to the point of tears. The concert was cut short only because Hackle’s wife finally had enough and crawled out of bed to complain that he was going to wake the kids if he didn’t can it.

Thus Grackle was born…

“Number One” is the title of the Grackle’s first CD release. It is also the title of the first song on the CD. It’s the most Lo-Fi of Grackle’s three CD’s thus far, mainly due to the fact that Hackle & Jackal were still in the process of choosing and learning the computer programs that they ended up employing during its recording and engineering. This is not a bad thing; it lends a rawness to the music that often enhances the psychedelic effects and creates an otherworldly feel that may not have been as effective with a more polished sound.

Even though it was produced a few years back, it still has the effect of causing intense hilarity if listened to under the right conditions. Jackal has described it as “what a crazy person may be hearing in head at all times”.
As is always the case with Grackle music, the experience in enhanced by the use of a decent pair of headphones with good bass response.

So, if you’re in the mood for a weird, good time; if you’re the kind of listener that is adventurous and gets bored with standard psychedelic fare; Grackle’s “Number One” should be just the tonic!!
