The latest work of John Anthony Franklin. The folk-rock sound is lyrically introspective with a pop grove that is sure to woo the listener to reminisce the music of greats like John Lennon, Neil Young and Bruce Cockburn. This one''s for sure worth checking out.
A lot of buzz in going on around about why Franklin went with his original name and not AKA Johnny Dock. The music it self answers the question. However, Franklin reinstates Johnny Dock as the producer of Franklin’s first record in 15 years. The production is second to none of any of the others in this genre of music. Dock proves to be very able to find the edge that pushes the Classic Rock envelope.
Franklin returns to his Roots. Those who know Franklin call this work “The essential John Franklin” musically, vocally and philosophically. He discovers other aspects of what those roots are beyond music as he takes the year to travel. It started March of 2006 and covered a quest in Texas, then through the migration area of the Lakota people in the Dakotas. Up the California coast revisiting many of the places he discovered at the young age of seventeen when he started his hitchhiking adventures of over 35,000 miles in the early seventies. Then another trip in the high mountain, ancient town of Real de Catorce, Mexico, Jackson Wyoming, Paris, the French Alps and through his ancestral land of Southern Georgia where he found the 2,000-acre plantation his Great Granddaddy Jason Franklin had raised his Grandfather after the Civil War.
It was a year of new discoveries, review, finishing unfinished business and seeking the answers to unanswered questions.
Now after 30 years of performing music, seven records, and four music videos Franklin has written and recorded 15 Spirit inspired songs. The record is titled SPIRIT OF THE DIRT and it IS New Classic Rock. The late Bruce Blackburn is quoted in the book A Bucks County State of Mind explains Franklin as a renaissance man not afraid to reinvent and described his music as Introspective Rock.
This body of sound expression art as Franklin calls it, is truly one of his greatest works. While recording, it is known that he fasted from food and drink, meditated and preformed several Sacred Sweat lodge ceremonies. Playing all the guitars, bass and singing all the vocals on the record he also recruited his brother Rick Franklin on Lap steel and bottleneck guitar along with Russ Broussard on Drums (from the High Plains Drifters), Dan McKinney on Keyboards, Linda Zapf Franklin on female vocals, and Carl Sweedy on Trumpet (who is the lead trumpet for the United States Army Band, played taps for Presidents Ragan and Fords funerals). The song Hope, love and Green has the back up voices of children that brings the pure essence of the lyric to light. This music is well worth the investment, you will want to come back to it again and again. Most of all you’ll want to share it with those you love.
