Clocking in at just over twenty-four minutes, the first solo release from Rosie Huntress could easily be described as a small, shiny gem in the rough. While Rosie has certainly gained her fair share of performance and recording experience as a member of several bands from the past, this endeavor sets Rosie up on a clear path to success with her solo debut.
This disc certainly goes for the gut from note one, pitching the most hook-laden and confident song of the lot as the first track. “Liar” is a first-class pop song, and while this effort may be purely pop, it sets the strong songwriting standard exhibited throughout the remaining tracks. Easily edging into the second track, “Nothing”, Rosie amps up her vocals and stretches her tone (as well as the musicians playing with her) into a smooth rock rhythm. The potential here is astonishing, and with each new listen of this disc, I was pleasantly surprised to hear new twists and turns develop into a sometimes unorthodox sound and energy. That type of play on lyricism, melody and vocal work, however, works well here and begins to feel more seamless as Rosie’s confidence shines through and the songs flow effortlessly from one to the next.
This is an artist who has just begun to tap into her potential, but who already owns every note and measure of her work. It’s exciting to hear strong vocals and an interesting sense of style and melody, while still sounding familiar and drawing on classic elements of pop and rock. It wouldn’t surprise me to find out that Rosie has gained a regional and national audience one day in the very near future.
