SHRINE FOR THE BLACK MADONNA combines the dense pop-pathos of early Motown with the keening fury of the Sex Pistols; the molten funk of electric-era Miles Davis with the psychedelic crunch of Led Zeppelin. On its two sprawling debut CDs, Paradise and Inferno, the band delivers postmodern folktales of blind faith, ruined love, sexual longing, and social rebellion in the age of Katrina and Iraq.
Snaking through the bedrock are traces of noise, soul, punk, mutant disco, metal, hip-hop, and dub, fired with melodies from other eras and beats from around the globe. By turns startling and seductive, the songs evoke a carnal, kaleidoscopic borderland where the day before yesterday meets the day after tomorrow.
Rising from this vortex is the Black Madonna, mythological patron saint to the troubled and the troublemakers, whose mission of relentless creation and destruction is given compelling new voice. From these stormy elements, Shrine for the Black Madonna has conjured something original and addictive.
