release their second full-length album, Break (Triple R Records), on April 24th, 2007. Multi-Grammy award-winning producer Ken Lewis (John Legend, David Byrne, Beastie Boys) produced the band’s 11-track sophomore album.
Five-string electric cello (its fifth string acts as bass), guitar, drums, and vocals make up Skidmore Fountain. In Break, expect a complex, textural and certainly modern sound. “Call this retro except that these guys do enough fresh things with the songwriting that it nails you,” Music Morsels wrote of their prior release. Skidmore Fountain has rapidly evolved since its birth seven years ago in Tucson, AZ, where the band’s classical training culminated. Next stop was Portland, OR, where they became part of the West Coast Indie Rock movement. But it was in Brooklyn that the original three multi-instrumentalists of Skidmore Fountain, Randy Bergida, Steven Cohen and Topu Lyo, joined with veteran drummer Dylan Wissing (Johnny Socko, Julia Jones). Together, the solid quartet quickly gelled into an advanced, exciting group, channeling influences like Gang of Four, David Bowie and the Specials through Skidmore Fountain’s unique Indie Rock orchestration. Skidmore Fountain has headlined at New York City venues CBGBs, Knitting Factory, the Bitter End and Piano’s. They landed in the semi-finals of the 2006 Emergenza Festival. Print publicity includes AM New York (circulation 350,000), Asian Reporter, and the Baruch College Ticker. They’ve been broadcast on Breakthru Radio, Boston college radio WZBC and WTBU, charted on Radio Crystal Blue and performed live on the nationally-syndicated Joey Reynolds Show.
Skidmore Fountain is one of those bands that is too modern to be considered classic rock and too classic to be considered modern rock. They fall somewhere in between, like the Killers. They don’t offer as many catchy hooks as the Killers, but they offer straight-ahead rock with some added depth.

Hailing from Brooklyn by way of Tucson, Ariz., and Portland, Ore., the band contains two classically trained instrumentalists, including Topu Lyo on five-string electric cello. Producer Ken Lewis, who has produced John Legend and the Beastie Boys, adds a certain amount of polish to the band’s sophomore release. Randy Bergida has a great rock and roll voice—ranging from a Johnny Rotten snarl to a David Bowie falsetto. Plus this is a band that is not afraid to ask the important questions, such as: “If you could get up from lightning/Would you get off from lightning?” (“Lightning”). I don’t know what it means either, but it sure is fun imagining possibilities.
