The Swinging Pachyderms have been playing together since the summer of 2005 and most of us have been friends and/or brothers way before that. If you had to place us in a particular category of music it would be Southern Rock. We’re a five piece band mostly from Erwin, Tennessee, except for our drummer Dave Whaley who hails from Stoney Creek, Tennessee. We started forming the band and developing our original music in the summer of 2005. So far we’ve written about 25 or 30 songs that we perform regularly at our shows. We’re a five piece Southern Rock band with 3 guitarists. That’s right, the Triple Axe Attack. And if we want to get real Southern we’ll throw in a steel guitar, fiddle and organ player to top it all off for larger venues.
Gary Schwenke makes up one of the three guitarists and also handles most of the lead vocals for the Pachyderms. He also strums a little bit on the mandolin here and there. Gary has been writing songs for about 6 years now and his writing style tends to blend country, folk and rock and roll together into a distinct style of it’s own.
Mark “Biff” Lavever is another one of the Pachyderms’ guitarist and also provides the backup and harmony vocals on the songs that really give them a distinct smooth sound. Biff also handles some lead vocals on some of the high lonesome tunes.
Jason Howze (only known by Howze, don’t call him Jason we won’t know who you’re talking about) is the lead guitarist for the band. Howze is a very talented guitarist who has really helped mold our sound. When you hear the first lick, you know you’re listening to Southern Rock. Howze also writes some of the music for the Pachyderms’ songs.
Corey Schwenke is actually a guitarist turned bassist which is not necessarily an easy transition to make. But Corey has pulled it off nicely and has progressed quickly as an overall musician. Corey also helps out some song writing and vocals as well.
David Whaley is the drummer for the band. Dave is a very talented musician all around. His instrument of choice is drums but he can also strum some guitar and even plays harmonica for us and helps out on vocals.
The Swinging Pachyderms are definitely a Southern Rock band, but our influences include anything and everything from bands and artists like Drive-By Truckers, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Johnny Cash to Clutch and Rage Against the Machine. Our varying taste in music is really what gives our music a distinct sound. You can really here the different styles being blended into one. The Swinging Pachyderms songs are real. They’re about real people and real life experiences. When you hear our songs we’ll rock, we’ll roll and we’ll tell you some stories that you know to be true and it’s always a “heart achin’ nose bleedin’ good time.”
