Driving home on February 1st, 2007, I heard a piece on NPR about the RPM Challenge (https://www.tradebit.com). The challenge is to record an entire album in the month of February. Sounds like great fun, right? And then we upped the ante by deciding to write all of the tunes for the album in February too! Well, that''s exactly what we did, and the result is "Pick 2".
Here''s the log we kept:
Feb 1: Heard story on NPR that mentioned the RPM challenge (https://www.tradebit.com). Wrote music & some lyrics to "Stage" & "Fall Apart". Started music for "Run Away"
Feb 2: Wrote music & lyrics for "Come Away With Me", "Your Eyes", & "Save Me". Completed lyrics for "Come Away With Me". Recorded demos of: "Stage", "Fall Apart", "Come Away With Me", "Your Eyes", "Save Me".
Feb 3: Finished lyrics for "Stage", "Fall Apart", "Your eyes", & "Save Me". Wrote & completed lyrics for "Everyone That You Know" - recorded demo.
Feb 4: Wrote & completed lyrics for "Real Love" & "The Distance" - recorded demos. Started "Pick 2" - recorded demo.
Feb 5: Finished writing lyrics for "Pick 2" & "Run Away".
Feb 6: Did drums for "Come Away With Me" & "Pick 2".
Feb 7: Did drums for "Real love".
Feb 8: Did drums for “Fall Apart", "Everyone That You Know", "Run Away", started "Save Me".
Feb 10: Recorded "Come Away With Me" - vocals a little rough. Recorded "Fall Apart" - sounds okay. Recorded "Everyone That You Know" - like this one.
Feb 11: Recorded "The Distance"
Feb 12: Messed with "Come Away With Me" - added backing vocal to try to disguise off notes in lead vocal - now I have two bad vocal tracks! Need to fix.
Feb 13: Recorded "Pick 2".
Feb 14: Wrote music & lyrics for "When I Go". Did drums for "Save Me".
Feb 15: Recorded demo of ”When I Go”
Feb 16: Recorded "Real Love".
Feb 19: Recorded "Run Away", got bass & guitar down for "Save Me".
Feb 21: Finished recording "Save Me". Recorded "Stage" - did drums live.
Feb 22: Recorded "Your Eyes".
Feb 23: Started recording "When I Go".
Feb 24: Finished recording "When I Go". Worked on cover art. Listened to entire album making notes for changes.
Feb 25: Small additions & touch-ups for blatant mistakes from notes.
Feb 26: First master mix.
Feb 27: Second master mix.
Feb 28: Burned CD. Printed artwork. Mailed it.
