A rock record with hints of country and folk. Interesting arranging, expect to hear organ, horns, pedal steel.

10 MP3 Songs
ROCK: Folk Rock, POP: Folky Pop

Details:
Tipple is the 3rd solo release by Jon Hyde. It was recorded at Hyde’s J-Tel studio and mixed by the excellent Tucker Martine (Decemberists, Laura Veirs). Tipple continues in the direction of the path laid out on the 2004 Blair EP and 2000’s Yellow Light CD. Expect to find here, melody above all, lyrics that don’t give it all away on the 1st listen and varied arrangements.

In addition to his solo records Jon is a member of the Transmissionary Six, Varmint (with Wayne Horvitz and Robin Holcomb) and Mount Analog. Jon is a multi instrumentalist and can be heard contributing to records by the likes of Jim White, Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter, Transmissionary 6, Mount Analog, Laura Veirs, Memphis (Stars side project), Downpilot, Slang (Widepread Panic side project), Lori Carson, Karen Pernick, Carrie Akre, Once for Kicks, Heather Greene, Aiko Shimada, Larry Barret, Terry Lee Hale and many others.

Hyde’s song “Hope Chest” from the “Yellow Light” CD was featured on Hear Music Volume 7 and his rendition of Buck Owens’ classic “Your Tender Loving Care” can be heard exclusively on Hear Music’s Sweetheart vol. 1. His instrumental “Blair” was featured in Hear music’s promotional materials for the 2004 Sundance Film Festival.

Praise for Jon Hyde

Yellow Light is one of those albums that rewards patience. This low-key, rootsy collection from Seattle singer-songwriter Jon Hyde resonates with a subtle, alt-country soulfulness that recalls the likes of Paul Burch, the Jayhawks, Wilco and Neil Young... [when you reach the end of the CD] you might find yourself simply returning to the first track. It''s that kind of album.

…Jon Hyde does plenty of good work with the dobro, pedal steel, accordion and banjo on his new album, Yellow Light. But his work with Tucker Martine on the production knobs is what sets this artful roots rock record apart from others in its genre.
--Richard Martin, Seattle Weekly

Reminiscent of Dylan, Petty, and Uncle Tupelo, Hyde provides alt-country rock twang, laden with wordplay and lyrics of slow despair and cautious hope... It’s a reverent reality rendered through magnificent music.
--David Legry, HEARmusic

Jon Hyde’s near-perfect pop sensibility and melancholy lyrics are blended with a subtle sense of humor, giving the impression he is smiling behind the music. Folk-rock and alt-country are just a few of the classifications for Hyde’s music, but most important is the strong attention to melody, lyrics and arrangement.
