Details:
Tony Bernardi was born on July 14th, 1959 in Tehran, Iran to a Greek mother and an Italian father and spent his early years in a small European community in the Middle East. As a child he was fascinated with many musical traditions, from Muslim chanting prominently heard in the streets of Tehran to the liturgical traditions of the Greek Orthodox Church and including traditional European and Middle Eastern music. He studied violin and later music composition, piano, art, sculpture, and poetry. He received an undergraduate degree in computer science and engineering from University of Maryland where he also studied music composition with the composer Laurence Moss. He also studied music composition with Gerald F. Muller at Saint Matthews Cathedral in Washington DC.

Tony Bernardi is intuitive and a student of metaphysics of various spiritual traditions. His spiritual practices began with and expanded through the intense study of A Course in Miracles, the Bible, various Eastern spiritual traditions, and the works of Eckhart Tolle. In the year 2003 he met his dear teacher and beloved friend Marshall Stewart Ball and began his path of service to humanity and a new chapter in his spiritual and artistic life.

Tony Bernardi is engaged in actively promoting Peace Awareness through HAP21, a company he founded to support creative and artistic undertakings by collaborating with creative people to produce art, music and literature that promote peace awareness in the world. He also continues to compose electronic and traditional art music, paints, sculpts, directs and performs musical works. The primary aim of the art of Tony Bernardi is to inform, touch, and awaken the human heart and mind with the power of creativity inspired by the spiritual and the intuitive.

The style and “voice” of Tony Bernardi’s art is distinctly his. His music has been influenced by the tradition of theatrical story telling and cinema. Although structurally baroque and fundamentally influenced by Vivaldi and J. S. Bach, it is significantly informed by the works of such prominent 20th Century composers as Mahler, Prokovfiev, Stravinsky, Shostakovich, and Philip Glass, among many. His music is free in tonal structure but faithful to melodically organized ideas that are often conceived intuitively and are contrapuntally arranged and through-composed. What seem to be most prominent about Bernardi’s music are his atmospheric whimsical storytelling moods, which are rich in expression and effective in touching the human heart.

Currently Tony Bernardi is writing a book based on a biblical story and is scheduled to be released later this year (2007). This work will be the basis of a musically staged multimedia performance work.
