_chaseface has been writing and recording his own songs for the past eight years. At the onset of what has now become an unprecedented project in its uniqueness and passion, he writes about the pain of growing up in the wrong body and trying to cope with a world that does not always understand. As a transgender ftm musician, he began by recording his vocals and a single guitar track. When his voice began to mature and his skills at playing and recording got better, he abandoned these earlier recordings to pursue more complex projects. Years later, he chose to come back and let this first part of the story be told for better or worse. Instead of throwing the old vocals and guitar tracks away, he came back with his now fully transitioned male voice and layered it over his original vocals. It actually sounds like more than one person are singing on these tracks, however, it is the same artist before and after undergoing hormone therapy.
“unmask” is the first in a set of four albums scheduled to be released throughout this spring and summer. Each album contains ten songs, and represents a specific time in the artist’s life. This first album is an introduction into the frustration and anger that comes with being forced to stand one’s ground as an individual. Written at age 18, it gives an insight into the mind of any young person struggling with drastically changing up and down emotions. There is certainly a dark, haunting edge to the music in this album, but there is also a certain hope and optimism that shines through.
“I was wrought with confusion, self-hate, and loss when I wrote these songs. But that is not what the whole album is about. It is very personal, and some of the things I say in it are shocking, however, there is a much deeper message that I’m trying to convey with this work. As a member of the often-overlooked transgender community, I would like to show that not everything is as tragic as people are led to believe. There is so much we can embrace about ourselves, and throughout later works, I think that comes through. Life is about triumphing over our own negativity and choosing to give ourselves completely and without pride.”
“unmask” is indeed a powerful set of songs. With its guiltless imperfections, expositive lyrics and novice-like approach to musical production, this album comes to life in a very human way. _chaseface completed every aspect of this project single-handedly, learning as he went along the way. His work promises to move anyone that takes the time to hear him.
