As a rebellious university professor and poet in the earlier part of this century, she led an unconventional, bohemian life. Suffering from cancer, she chose to end her life by walking quietly into the sea she loved so dearly. The newspaper for which she wrote a column received her final poem by mail shortly after her death. This poem served as the basis for the lyrics of this song.
