NY ARTIST HYRDACARBON TO RELEASE DEFINITIVE "STILL LIFE." WORK

There are underground bands, and then there are bands so underground, it''s as if they are trying to tunnel to China. Such is the case with NY singer/songwriter Timothy Growley (a.k.a. hydracarbon) and the release of his debut album "still life."
The pioneer of "sludge," or fluid grunge, Growley hails originally from Mina along the outskirts of Sherman, N.Y. The tracks on "still life." are deep and heavy, and if you think you know where they are going (or have been), think again.
"I was always fascinated with the feminist punk genre, like Sleater-Kinney type bands that could stand up to their culture and say what''s really on their mind. Unfortunately, I wasn''t born with the right equipment. So I added some bass and power cords, and then slowed it down a bit. That''s how it all got started," said Growley.
"still life.", which is named after the Shuno Junzo work of the same title, is crafted in the shishosetsu tradition, whereas meaning is drawn out of the authors conviction and personal experience. The tracks are bound as a collection of plotless episodes with a singular introspective theme.
"I have always valued the small common events in life," said Growley. "The trick was to link a series of delicate events in such a way to create a powerful, yet essential statement. People are inundated with commodity clichés and want something necessary out of life."
Don''t expect to witness any spandex or choreographed dance routines here, hydracarbon is somewhere between Sleater-Kinney, The White Stripes, and (early) Nirvana. Think guitar, bass, drums, riff rock with a lot of screaming to effectively drown out the thoughtful vocal melodies.
Growley produced and composed the album himself. That kind of artistic license permeates the scope and content of the work. "If you pave the road, you have to go it alone," he said.
"The impossible is a self-fulfilling prophecy," said Growley, who had no prior musical training. "To take it on, it only takes time, and if your lucky, it''s all worth the wait."
