Growing up in a small town tastes pretty much the same wherever you are in the world. Smoke too much. Drink too much. Get your heart broken; maybe even break someone elses. Feel alone until you find a song or a band that speaks to you. Feel less alone when you pick up an instrument and meet others who feel the same. Form a band, rehearse drunk, rehearse straight, laugh a lot, swear constantly, sweat; bond.
Fast forward. You’re supposed to be a grown up right? How come hearing some songs can still make you feel adrenalized? Lie Big hope to capture that feeling; between them they are influenced by Alice In Chains, Kings X, Soundgarden, Tool, Nine Inch Nails, Led Zeppelin, Sabbath, Priest, Deftones, Neil Young, Pearl Jam, and hundreds of other bands. But it’s not just about that, otherwise they would just get you drunk and play their favourite songs at you full blast!
It’s about patience, letting songs grow, distilled, taking influences and blending them into a twisted new form. Alchemy. To hit on exactly the sound they wanted it took this long. The song ‘Overcome’ was a vision that came from Ade’s head in 1995. They asked, “what if we could have achieved that sound then?” the answer is it had to take this long, it just wasn’t possible then.
It’s not all about being technically brilliant, 50 notes a second solos, it’s about realising an idea, a dream. Pouring some feeling into it and making it have it!
The original plan was to re-record a couple of old tracks and maybe one new song, three days later there were three new songs done and dusted and the Lie Big “sound” had been created. A few months later the “Severed” album was complete and pressed.
Lie Big have more to offer than just the huge wall of sound and anger that is “Overcome”. Take the measured attack of “Last One Standing”, the drifting harmonies of “When” and the complexities of the title track, this is far from a one trick alligator. The album bristles with energy and anger from start to finish. “Underside” drags you under with it, then pummels you into submission, “Substitute Lovers” disturbs you and “I Am I” delivers its message like a note attached to a melodic house brick.
