We have come to The Sun Lake from other places. We have come to rest and enjoy, but the sun is so hot. And we have come at noon when the lake has become a ready mirror for the sun so that we see no water but only light in the pool. It is such a beautiful spot that we count ourselves lucky to have found it. We are so hot though, that there is nothing to do but go into the light, into the water to cool ourselves.
And so we do, donning our SCUBA gear, we dive into the water to visit the limestone caverns. We are enjoying the cool and dark waters, and the sounds of our own breathing as we explore the dark recesses of the lake.
We have become water bourne and our air is just enough to circle the lake above and below. We seem to be breathing the water itself, rather than the air from our tanks. We have been down here too long and we need to surface. As we do, we see that the sky has clouded over a bit and perhaps a storm will brew.
We head up into the nearby hills and passes that lead to the mountains surrounding the sun lake and we encounter fog and light, movement and shadow among the dense vegitation and rocks. We are not sure where we are and use the radio but can get no station and we feel threatened by the weather. Thunder is heard in the distance and we start back for camp.
As weather threatens and our small camp, so small and frail seems hopelessly inadequate, we prepare to leave. We have hiked in, but because of the weather, we will fly out. The turnover of the old prop engine makes us smile. Although we hate to leave, we circle a few times over this beautiful area before heading off and leaving the area. I feel hot tears on my cheeks.
