When asked why he has written so many songs about flawed relationships, Carleton replies, "relationships are usually flawed, and usually when it seems like they''re not, at least one partner is faking something. But that''s OK, faking can work great for quite a while!" Forever the hopeful cynic, Carleton''s music strives to ease and even reconcile the suffering caused to us by those we are so willingly cursed to have fallen in love with. "Although these days I am extremely lucky to be in a great relationship," he says, "it''s just so interesting to examine all the ones I screwed up!"
Best described as modern acoustic rock, the Carleton sound blends raw emotional lyrics with catchy melodies and rich acoustic guitar textures that are layered with the inventive use of a digital loop sampler. Although it may sound like he is surrounded by a band, all the parts, even the drum beats, are played by Carleton on guitar. "Musically, I try to be as honest as my lyrics," Carleton says. "By playing all the parts myself, I am able to give the audience a performance that is 100% me."
