Details:
Carli Muñoz is a gifted, pianist, composer, leader and arranger, whose interpretative musical strength comes from his vast and diverse experience along with his deep knowledge and early influences of the main elements of jazz: its Afro-American and Caribbean roots and its dynamic metamorphosis that runs from post-roaring 20''s to our present time.

This talented artist was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Early in his career, c.1960, Carli got his shot to play regularly with the jazz veterans that were performing regularly at San Juan jazz nightspots. Among some of those musicians were; bassist Freddy Thomas, late legendary percussionist Sabú Martinez (who had featured guest appearances in many of the early recordings of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers), drummers Monchito Muñoz and Joe Morello, and the late veteran trumpet player Juancito Torres.

His need for continuous exploration of all musical genres and styles took him to performing world wide with a variety of artist which today influences his unique style of improvisation. This unique style - a delicate balanced of aggressiveness and sensitivity and a deep innate understanding of the nature of jazz, along with his unique ability to seamlessly combine a wide spectrum of music into the jazz idiom - has converted him in one of the most refreshing and listenable upcoming pianist in the contemporary jazz music scene.

The versatility of his performance has led him to perform and record with some of world''s best jazz and pop artist. Among this group stands out Charles Lloyd, Chico Hamilton, Eddie Gomez, Les McCann, Wayne Henderson, George Benson, James Gadson, Paul Horn, Putter Smith, Michael Simbelo, Jimmy Haskell, The Beach Boys, Wilson Pickett, The Association, Al Jarreou, Peter Cetera, Blondie Chaplin, and Evie Sands among other great artist.

Since December 1998 Carli opened Carli Café Concierto, a world class fine dining restaurant and jazz venue where he performs nightly solo or with a variety of artist, and on weekends with his trio. Carli has a popular piano solo release on Pelosenel Records called "Love Tales" and has currently released, on September 2003, his most recent recording "Both Sides Now" featuring bassist Eddie Gomez, guest players are drummer Joe Chambers and flautist Jeremy Steig.

From pop to bop

Carli Muñoz was given a piano for a birthday gift at age 13 in 1961. After several month of ignoring the instrument and total refusal to take music lessons, Carli out of boredom he says, started playing (with) the piano; "to my amazement the music flowed as if I already knew how play!" Although borne and raised in Puerto Rico, his music of choice was jazz, European avant garde and pop American music.

By age 15, after having experimented with a local neighborhood garage dance combo (Los Colegiales) and a rock´n roll trio (The Red Fever) of his making, Carli got his shot to play with the jazz veterans that were performing regularly at the jazz city nightspots. Among some of those musicians were; bassist Freddy Thomas, percussionist Sabú Martinez (Had several recording guest appearances with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers), drummers Monchito Muñoz and Joe Morello, and late legendary trumpet player Juancito Torres.

From 1965 to 1969, Carli formed part of an original rock band called "The Living End", aka "Space", performing as a house band at (after being house band at The Scene Au Go Go in Old San Juan, P.R.) the famed Manhattan night spot Scott Munny´s "Rolling Stone" creating waves in the late 60´s New York rock scene.
On respond to an invitation from a friend to visit Los Angeles for a weekend (the weekend lasted 16 years), Carli goes to LA where soon enough he starts getting calls from various artist to perform and record. Some of those artists are: Wilson Pickett, The Beach Boys (11 years), George Benson, Les McCann, Chico Hamilton, Wayne Henderson, Charles Lloyd, Peter Cetera, and Evie Sands.

During the 70´s while working with The Beach Boys, Carli kept an experimental fusion group called "Your Own Space". Late night cessions went on in-between tours through the decade at his home recording studio in Mt. Washington, where local jazz musician would often gather to play and record often until day light. His band (Your Own Space), also performed frequently at the LA underground jazz spots playing Carli''s original songs and alternating regularly with Al Jarreou and Ricky Lee Jones before their fame. In those days Carli''s as well as Jarreou''s and Jones band got paid only by the collections from happy patrons, by the band passing the hat. Some of the musicians in Carli''s band where: Duke Mc Vinny (bass), Art Rodriguez (drums), Chris Pinnick (guitar), Michael Turre (horns and flute), Bob Williams (trumpet), "Nasty" Latimer (percussion), and Carli on Fender Rhodes piano.

In 1985 Carli visited Puerto Rico (another long weekend), reestablished home-base, and has been performing with his jazz trio until now. In December 1998 Carli opened Carli Café Concierto, a world class fine dining and live jazz restaurant where he performs. Carli keeps close ties with the mainland where he often goes to record under his own label Pelosenel Q Lo Records. Three of his most recent CDs are: "Love Tales" (piano solo),"Both Sides Now" with bassist Eddie Gomez, drummer Joe Chambers and flautist Jeremy Steig and "Live at Carli''s Vol. 1", the first of a live series recorded at Carli Cafe Concierto.
