AUTHORS NOTE

This is how I fell in love with storytelling. When I was a little boy, my father would often tell tales of “back home”, working the land and deep sea fishing. He would speak with details so vivid; I wondered how could one have such a great memory. I would listen and imagine the Jumbies or Cow Foot Woman really coming to life and haunting the misbehaving children.
Sometimes at night my father would listen with pleasure as I read to him. I would learn later that the pleasure came from that ancient human desire to hear the melodic human voice. A pleasure reinforced by the West African tradition of the oral history via the storytelling Griot(gree-oh).

My dad has “gone on to glory” yet Gerald, Fish of The Spirit! is one that remains in my heart. Adapted and “penned” in the lost art of storytelling that made the griot survive despite the radio, televison and even the printing press. I have enjoyed it with my children an kids of all ages everywhere go...
