Artist Profile

"Love makes the world, makes the world spin ''round - we give a lot of lovin'' and its comin'' back around." So goes the chorus and overall vibe of Reggae Rock Hop, Shaka Buku''s latest musical feast of reggae, rock, funk, and hip-hop. Anchored by the powerful and very distinctive voice of Shaka (a.k.a. Chad Nellis), Reggae Rock Hop is a masterpiece of musical adventure, with hypnotic bass lines, unforgettable melodies, beautifully arranged horns, driving rhythms and jumpin beats. Brimming with life, Shaka Buku elevates listeners to rejoice and dance.

Raised in Denver Colorado and Southern California, Shaka spent most of his childhood in the adrenaline producing culture of sports and was always passionate about music. It wasn''t until after college though while on a surf trip in San Clemete California that he was actually introduced to his first instrument the acoustic guitar. Touched profoundly by this experience, he vowed that very day to devote the rest of his life to music.

Shaka would define his own eclectic style and message directly influenced by the simplicity and social consciousness of Bob Marley, the funk and groove of Stevie Wonder and the power and edge of Led Zeppelin. The obstacles on this path brought many challenges for which Shaka sought the foundation and wisdom of Buddhist teachings and spiritual masters like Mahatma Ghandi, Shakyamuni Buddha, and Daisaku Ikeda. These masters of spirituality combined with the masters of music would provide the foundation for Shaka Buku''s music and message.

This would spawn "Good Vibrations," Shaka''s first album, released independently in April of 2000. A multitalented individual, Shaka would sing, play guitar, write, produce and arrange the entire album. Accompanied by an 8-piece band he would then tour and donate performances for several humanitarian organizations, most notably the Victory Over Violence initiative (VOV). Diversifying his talents he would also write compositions for the Edge Performing Arts in LA, and fill in for several local LA acts as a lead vocalist.

Another three years of growth and development would then culminate in the highly anticipated Reggae Rock Hop, Shaka''s sophomore album released by Empower Records in Dec of 2003. A milestone achievement in Shaka''s career, RRH is marked by a newfound ability to dig deep and bear his own soul while at the same time awakening this greatness in others. The result is a more mature, heartfelt, rich and flavorful album. An all-star cast of musicians joined forces with Shaka to contribute to Reggae Rock Hop, most influential of which was producer, writer, and multi-instrumentalist Pancho Tomaselli. A native of Ecuador, Pancho was educated at the Berklee School of Music in Boston then moved to LA and worked for acts like Nelly Furtado, Common/Mary J. Blige, Santana and Chaka Kahn, among many others. A host of other well-known LA musicians made contributions to the album such as: drummer /percussionist, Paul Gonzalez, (Dave Samuels, Narada Michael Walden, Chaka Kahn, Stomp); producer/writer/guitarist JB Eckl, (Santana, War, En Vogue, Celina); Producer/Keyboardist Sebastian Morton (Sting, Common/Mary J. Blige), and many others.

Ultimately, the mission of Shaka Buku as he states "Is to awaken the joy and power in people. This joy and power once manifested in each individual creates happiness one by one and will eventually help create world peace." Shaka Buku is now supporting Reggae Rock Hop on tour.
