About us...
The Sunyata Jazz Quartet has been writing, performing, and recording in the Boston area since December, 2005. They play monthly gigs at The Kirkland Cafe on Washington St. in Somerville, MA and perform throughout the Cambridge/Boston area as well. Check the schedule for upcoming performances.
What is Sunyata?
Sunyata is a sanskrit word which may be translated as interconnectedness and relativity. It is the belief that no thing exists independent of anything else. We see Jazz as an expression of sunyata; each musician creates sound based on what he or she hears other musicians playing. The music happens in an instant and can not be predetermined or changed.

Matt Clauhs - Saxophone & Flute
Matt Clauhs grew up in Bucks County, PA. He studied saxophone and flute at Penn State University while obtaining a bachelor of science in music education. In the State College area, Matt led his own group, the Freedom Jazz Quintet, and performed weekly gigs with two other jazz ensembles, the Andrew Jackson Jazz Showcase and Groove Affliction. In addition to state college bars, these groups performed at corporate and private parties, weddings, and Jazz Festivals. After graduating from Penn State, Matt moved to Massachusetts and began work as a instrumental music teacher in the Boston Public School District. There he teaches Jazz Band, Jazz Improvisation, Wind Ensemble and Theory at the Boston Arts Academy. In addition to teaching, Matt continues to further his own improvisational skills by studying the saxophone and flute with New England Conservatory Professor George Garzone. Natalie Dietrich - Vibes
Natalie Dietrich (Switzerland), is a Vibist/Drummer and Composer/Arranger experienced in the European and North American Music Scene in a variety of styles from Jazz, Fusion, Latin-Jazz to Contemporary Classical Music. Natalie Dietrich studied Classical Percussion at the Academy of Music, Zurich and Jazz-Drums at the Academy of Music, Cologne Germany with Keith Copeland. Natalie Dietrich has been working as a freelance musician, teacher and orchestra sub for over ten years before receiving a scholarship for Berklee College of Music in January 2004. Various performances: Opera Zurich, Tonhalle-Orchester Zurich, basel sinfonietta, guest artist with Sina (Switzerland), Musical DEEP (Zurich), World Exposition Hanover, Swiss Exposition02, Klangwolke Linz (AUSTRIA) 2001. 2000 she composed and realized her own project "MONDGRÜN, a Color-Cycle in Music and Visuals” with 7 musicians. Natalie has been working with Wolfgang Muthspiel, Phil Wilson, Richard Evans, Scott deOgburn, Mark White, Jon Hazilla, Gustavo Assis-Brasil, Christian Muthspiel, Sophia Gubaidulina, Mathias Rüegg, Ernesto Simpson among others. From January 2004 – December 2005, Natalie has been studying Vibraphone with Dave Samuels and Ed Saindon at Berklee College of Music. She graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor''s Degree in Performance. 2005 Natalie Dietrich started a Duo with Ed Saindon / „Mallets In Motion“; she was then on tour with her Percussion-Trio RHYTHMUSA and Dave Samuels; and she also founded her own band "Natalie Dietrich Group" featuring Mark White & Scott deOgburn. Performances, workshops and recordings with all these groups in the Boston area, Switzerland and Germany 2005-2006. In addition, Phil Wilson asked her to join the famous Rainbow Big Band which appeared at the “Vineyard Vibes” 2005 and “New Hampshire Jazz Festival 2006” among other occasions. Natalie tours regularly with Percussionist Pit Gutmann, Co-leader of the Contemporary Jazz Quintet „Dietrich - Gutmann Project“. In May 2006 the Quintet was on tour with special guest Scott deOgburn on Keys and Trumpet.
Rodrigo Bonelli - Drums
Rodrigo W. Bonelli started taking lessons on drums by the age of twelve years old influenced by his father, an amateur trumpet player and a Jazz and Brazilian music aficionado. By 1994 he started playing gigs with singers and instrumentalists in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. While still developing himself as a drummer Rodrigo felt the need to extend his knowledge on music theory, which made him start taking ear-training and piano lessons. By 1997 he started studying music education at the Rio de Janeiro University and gigging professionally and sharing the stage with great Brazilian musicians and composers such as Baden Powell, Carlos Lyra and Claudio Roditi (trumpeter on the Dizzy Gillespie Pan-American band). On 1998 he was invited to collaborate on several projects with Felipe Baden Powell and Marcel Powell on their group called Baden Powell quartet. By 1998 Rodrigo had already performed in some of the best clubs in Rio de Janeiro, such as Jazzmania, Satchmo Bar, Mistura fina and Rio jazz club where international musicians such as Art Blakey, Michel Legrand, Tommy Flanagan and Ron Carter played. On 1999 Rodrigo got a scholarship from the Berklee College of music through a program called world scholarship tour that sends Berklee teachers to audition musicians in South America. Still in 1999 Rodrigo did professional recordings for a major Brazilian TV station (TV Globo). He was also invited to teach drums at two music schools in Rio de Janeiro: Centro Musical Antonio Adolfo (ran by arranger, author and Pianist Antonio Adolfo) and Movimento Musical led by pianist Rosaly Auler where he taught 30 students for two years. He also kept a busy recording and performing schedule playing all sorts of styles.
On December 1999 Rodrigo attended a jam session led by trumpet player Claudio Roditi (Dizzy Gillespie) in Rio de Janeiro, which got him a job playing every Saturday of 2000 with a jazz and Brazilian music group led by Guilherme Dias Gomes, a well-known Trumpet player/Producer and a Berklee alumni from 1978. On January 2001 Rodrigo moved to Boston to study at the Berklee College of Music not only to perfect his skills as a drummer but also to gain knowledge in the music composition field. At Berklee he took several writing and arranging classes from Scott Free, Ted Pease and Dick Lowell. A professional music major student with concentrated courses on writing and drumming Rodrigo took lessons on his instrument from Casey scheuerell (Dizzy Gillespie, Jean Luc Ponty, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Kitaro, Gino Vanelli), John Ramsay (Wynton Marsalis, Brandford Marsalis, Kevin Eubanks, The Platters), Ed Kaspik and Jon Hazilla (James Williams, Billy Taylor, Ron Carter, George Garzone, Benny Golson, Billy Pierce and Larry Coryell among others) and attended clinics by Antonio Sanchez (Pat Metheny, Avishay Cohen), Horacio Hernadez (Michel Camilo, Roy Hargrove, Gonzalo Rubalcaba), Michael Shapiro (L.A Studio), Gregg Bissonette (Joe Satriani, Ringo Star) and Lewis Nash (Jazz great). While still in school he played extensively in Boston at places such as Emily''s, All Asia café, Boston world trade Center, Chopin'' Block, Bay side expo, Fairmont Park Plaza Hotel, Midway Café, Sally O''briens, as well as Nashua, New Hampshire (Martha''s exchange, Michael Timothy''s), Acton (Acton Jazz Café), Weymouth (Ecco Jazz Bar), Amesbury (The roost Jazz club), Stoughton (concerts at the Stoughton library) Cape Cod and Wilmington. He has also performed in New York having the opportunity to share the stage with Saxophonist John Tutino, Bassist Cameron Brown and Singer Alec Philips. At Berklee Rodrigo has also participated on several recordings and recitals playing different styles of music such as Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, Jazz and Fusion. He has performed and recorded extensively with the Boston Based band LC Band. He also recorded some of his own original compositions on September 2003 with some of the most talented young musicians in the Boston scene. He has graduated on May 2004 with a degree as a professional music major with concentrated courses in arranging, composition and drum set performance with an average of 3.5 GPA.
On May 2004 Rodrigo was invited to perform in Scotland with the Konrad Wiszniewsky International quartet. The group was sponsored by the Berklee College of music and the Scottish artist council. The quartet included two of Rodrigo''s composition in their repertoire every night. In Scotland Bonelli had the opportunity to play in Major venues such as the Dundee Jazz festival, the Tron theatre, Henry''s jazz Cellar, 80 Queen Street, The Plough Hotel Jazz club among others. The group Performed ten dates in the cities of Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Dundee. While in Scotland the group got great reviews from Scottish music critics and great response from the crowd. After Scotland Rodrigo got a job as a music teacher in Stoughton Massachussets at the Stoughton music center. He currently teaches over sixteen students per week. In November 2004 he had one of his compositions chosen to make part of the Berklee promotional CD 2005 which is going to be released in April. He has also participated in recordings in several professional studios in the New England area, such as the Blue Jay studio, Solstice studio in Stoughton, Wallspring in Acton, CNC studios in Allston and Dinosounds in Somerville. He keeps on performing in the New England with some of the most talented musicians in the area such as: Dan Tepfer, Michel Reis, Nick Goumas, Jennifer Greer, GB3 Band, the Robert Tarchara and Steve Tapper Brazilian Music duo, Bill Ward as well as his own Trio and quartet.
