Here finally is a release to wrap your ears around from Corvallis, Oregon’s Ralph Bassinger. After over thirty years of playing blues and boogie piano and writing music, Ralph has finally turned his attention to a CD release of his own. He shouldn’t have waited so long.
Ralph wanted his music to speak for itself and be as pure as when it was written, he achieved that and more. With Ralph on this release is his good friend Jimmy D. Lane on guitar. This CD is the result of two good friends jamming for one afternoon in the studio. The music was recorded at Blue Heaven Studio in Salina, Kansas, the same studio where Jimmy Lane records his own work.
Ralph tells me he was humbled at the opportunity to associate with the son of one of his heroes, let alone record with him. Jimmy D. Lane is the son of legendary Chicago blues man Jimmy Rogers. Jimmy offered the perfect touch with his smooth guitar riffs filling out the songs Ralph masterfully played on the piano.
I have often said that in my opinion Ralph is the Otis Spann of this millennium, as nobody else seems to have what it takes to fill those enormous shoes. This opinion has been concurred by many in the industry including: Billy Gibson, Root Doctor, Cole Prior Stevens, Patrick Vining and Jimmy D. Lane.
Ralph’s greatest compliment came from Jimmy Lane the first time he played for Jimmy. He was so impressed he said “My Pop would have hired you on the spot”. This is quite a compliment when one considers that Jimmy Rogers was accustomed to playing with the likes of Otis Spann, Muddy Waters, Hubert Sumlin, Alvin Lee and every other major blues artist in the United States.
What People are saying about the CD:
Man, this is some of the best barrelhouse piano I have heard come down the track in a very long time!!! I cannot get enough of it, playing it over and over. The chemistry between Ralph and Jimmy is amazing. Highly recommend this disc to everybody.
