BLACKBIRDS came into being in late 2005 when Mike Slajchert joined with former student Claire Hellige to see what kind of musical stew could result from mixing a neophyte with a pristine voice with an old gravelly-voiced musical vet who has been involved in the Chicago music scene for three decades-plus. Claire eventually had to devote her time to school and work, and the distance from Chicago to St. Louis has made it impossible for that connection to continue. Enter Jasmine Quintana - dancer, model, student of the performing arts at DePaul - to add her incredible voice to the mix.
Some of our music appears on SOUNDAID, a place where musicians from around the world offer their tunes to help Heifer fight world hunger.
Whatever profits come from these ventures will go to fighting AIDS in Africa, especially through the work of Dr. Mardge Cohen from Chicago (you can read about her in the "news" section here).
