MP3 Barry Romberg's Random Access - Big Giant Head

Jazz fusion electric/eclectic improv

11 MP3 Songs
JAZZ: Jazz Fusion, JAZZ: Free Jazz

Details:
Big Giant Head is the latest installment from six time National Jazz Award and Juno Nominated drummer Barry Romberg and his group Random Access and features longtime bandmates; Kevin Turcotte-trumpet, Kelly Jefferson-sax, Geoff Young-guitar, Rich Brown-bass, Kieran Overs-bass and special guest Kirk Macdonald-sax. This is the 6th CD in the Random Access series, and the 12th CD on the Romhog label.
The CD features a variety of exciting new compositions showcasing the bands unique sound with some muscular performances by all members of the group. Big Giant Head, like its predecessor Accidental Beef promises not to disappoint the longtime RA fans with its brand of the electric and eclectic hard hitting sound.
From the intricate rhythms and high energy playing of the opening track Birthday Cakes & Lawyers to the Weather Report influenced W & J, the Ornette inspired Make Up Your Mind, the exotic ballad Another Time, and the bluesy title track Big Giant Head, this disc does not disappoint.
Other standouts tracks are Kirk Macdonalds’ solo on 44 dd, the leader digging in his heels on Suite For Drum Solo, the ultra funky Dermonds and the burning closer Geronimo.

On Big Giant Head

“The results are fiery, resolutely grooving and less abstract than one would think. It’s tempting to call the music “fusion,” as it mixes jazz and rock, but with it’s electronic textures and avante-garde exploration, it’s closer to Miles Davis’s work in the early 70’s or even the avant-rock of Frank Zappa.”
Mike Doherty, National Post

“Random Access…..has been a successful project, generating accessible but always forward-looking jazz at the tasty frontline of new music……Rom’s team is an all-star Toronto group, the turbulent processes always suggest brave new worlds..…just a note away, encouraged by the constant thrust of Romberg’s drums.”

Geoff Chapman, Toronto Star
