Brash is the lovechild of Brett Boston, Sam Lawrence, and Josh Phillips. The band originally began as Lawston, which was just Brett, Sam, and another undisclosed individual. They wrote many, but recorded very few songs: six, to be exact. Some of them do however make an appearance on records by Brash. In our first release The Changing Moods of Brash (Demos and Promos), you will be greeted by three Lawston tracks, including the original version of Bram, which was the first song ever recorded by the band that you now know and love as Brash. The other tracks, both of which are demos, are It''s Like Camping, which is a simple guitar/drum/cowbell groove, followed by The Symphony of Henry IV. This song is an arrangment of string music backed by a little accoustic guitar and a subtle tambourine. From a pure musical standpoint, many viewed it as Lawston''s best song, but none of the band members thought it fit in with their genre of music. The only other song that will be on an album that has a Lawston tie to it is Hoover''s Buffoy, which was written before the Brash days, but not recorded until Josh joined the band.
An interesting sidenote on that song is this: None of the three members had any singing experience. Yes, we know. That news comes as quite a bombshell, as you''ll hear Brett show off his underwhelming vocal abilities in their songs. But Woody looked at Brett and said "You wrote this song! Sing it, or I''ll hit you." So Brett sang the song, and history was made.
But back to the origin of Brash. After it was official that the Lawston days were over, Brett and Sam searched high and low for a third member that they could advance their musical abilities with. They found such man in the flesh of their good friend Josh Phillips. Josh shared Brett and Sam’s passion for smooth, disco rock/techno/rave music. So they got together to record some songs, adopt the monikers of Max Amorous (Brett), Woody Sizemore (Sam), Donald Rammage (Josh), and put out some albums.
Now please, allow me to speak freely about our upcoming records.
"Kickin'' Doors and Stabbing Beds mentions many countries. We mention these countries in hope that they will embrace us, and possibly one day, allow us to bathe in their sweet, cool waters. This is why we do not mention countries such as Venezuela, Niger, or Yemen. The Changing Moods of Brash (Demos and Promos), mentions only one country. We''re sorry.
If we are sure of one thing, it is that our records will have something for everybody. Even our promo CD will be very diverse. It starts off with a great bass which leads into some very soothing piano music, accompanied by a calming violin in the background. It then proceeds into a very wise man giving very wise advice. But does it stop there? No! It goes back to the soothing music and leads into a little techno style synthesizer, where the song ends with one last word of advice. And that’s just one song’s diversity. The following song, Gettin'' Dirty, is your basic 70''s party track. It was just made three decades too late. We feel like Bram is the highlight of the record. You may disagree though. However of all the songs Max has been a part of, that is his favorite. Bram is followed by a simple, raw, grunge-type rock instrumental. The fourth track, The Symphony of Henry IV, is just what it says it is: a symphony. Delicate strings, graced by an acoustic guitar in the background. After that, the next song hits with Brash’s very unique style of dance music, mixing guitars, synthesizers, drum machines, drum kits, electric guitars, bass guitars, a piano, and hand claps. Orange Juice and Milk has been called “the epitome of Brash dance music.” Rounding up the release, is the original version of Bram.
Allow me to give some examples of our diversity in Kickin’ Doors and Stabbing Beds. Our first song, Sind Sie je Nach New York City Gewesen? Die Geshichte von den Sich Duellierenden Synthesizern, is not only one of the longest song titles you''ll ever find, but also a song set in a live atmosphere with the crowd keeping on their dancing shoes, and just getting nutty to "The Dueling Synthesizers." Our second song, Me and DJ Scooter Clinanus is our most acclaimed song. It is a parody of white rappers and DJs. We didn''t feel these had enough controversy in their lives, so we thought we''d stir some things up. But maybe you want to just hear some good indie rock music with killer lyrics. Then FIRE in the Streets, Hoover''s Buffoy, and Immolate Me are sure to be played in your stereo. What about the organ you ask? Well, rest assured we did not forget about that instrument. Oh no. A Pirate’s Life For Me will be quite satisfying if you dig the organ. Now, I know what you''re thinking. There''s no way you can have a quality acoustic ballad on your album. You''re wrong. Leave a Message will be a delight to you it that is the type of music you enjoy. But now, you''re probably thinking we''re not going to supply enough dance music. Quite the contrary. Our album will consist of eighteen songs. There are times throughout this eighteen track record we hit with some dance tracks that will make you want to lose all regard for the things around you and just make love to everything. Quality tracks such as M.K.D., FIRE in the Streets (Dance Mix), Orange Juice and Milk, and Sind Sie je Nach New York City Gewesen?... and FIRE in the Streets (Lil'' Harold''s Synth Superstar Mix) highlight the dance portion of the album. This record is guarenteed to keep you on the edge of your seat, and wanting more.
Kickin'' Doors and Stabbing Beds is sure to be an album that makes you forget about your worries, and at times drives you to contemplate the beauty of life and ask yourself some very deep questions you never knew you cared about. Then, just a couple minutes later, you will find yourself bouncing all over the room trying to contain yourself during one of our dance beats. Then there will be times when you will find yourself driving in your car, with the windows down, blasting the stereo, and singing along to one of our tunes.
Our goal as a band is to put out an album the likes of which you have never heard. We refuse to be classified as "just another techno band." We fight through the barriers and deliver some one of a kind music. We are confident to say that we truly have something to listen to no matter what mood you are in.
Just to let you all know, we were originally going to have 22 tracks on Kickin'' Doors... but the release date got pushed back a few months, so instead of taking that time to get depressed that we won''t have an album out until this winter, we simply kept writing and recording more songs. As of June, 2007, we have about 25 songs that we feel are worthy of making an appearance on an album. Long story short, we hope to put out our second album a year or so after the release of our first album, and continue the trend of releasing an annual record. At this moment, we do not know what kind of a feel our second album will have. Will it contain slower hits such as Trumped and Immolate Me, disco rock tunes like A Plateprater Saved My Life This Afternoon and FIRE in the Streets, or more dance tracks like M.K.D. and Orange Juice and Milk? Only time will tell.
