About “On a Plane With Mary Jane”, by Chemical Fred:

Everybody knows and loves a pothead. This song was inspired by a good friend of mine who at one point at the height of his cannabis years, spent hours a day getting stoned. Since I was a kid I’ve been writing songs about people I know, mostly interesting, some crazy, and eccentric characters.

I hope that when you hear this song you’ll say “yeah I remember when” or “this totally reminds of so & so in high school or college.” Years ago, I first recorded a demo of “On a Plane With Mary Jane” with a buddy of mine playing guitar using a basic four-track recorder. After getting some laughs from my friends, it was suggested a couple of times that I send this song to Adam Sandler. So if you’re listening Adam let’s add this to your next soundtrack! (lol)

At first I didn’t do anything with the song. But after getting to know Garageband recently (Apple’s Music creation software), I started to experiment with new base lines, melodies and effects. This got me fired up again. I refined some of the lyrics and came up with a new stoney concept for the bridge. Then another person brought up Sandler and then came Weeds on Showtime. Pot is SO mainstream! It seemed the song was destined to be recorded. So I said that’s it-- I decided to publish and release this song on 4/20, 2007.

The music for On a Plane With Mary Jane was recorded at 4th Street Recording in Santa Monica. The vocals were taped in my bathroom. Gotta love the acoustics of a bathroom. 4th Street Recording is the same place No Doubt, Weird Al, Alice Cooper, Incubus, Hoobastank, and a long list of bands recorded their tracks. Across the street from the 3rd street promenade, this facility has the coolest vibe inside. Part of the appeal of this place is its location but also the engineers tell me that it’s the perfect set-up for music recording. The old school quality mic on this tune was the same kind of mic Jimi Hendrix used.

Special thanks to engineer “Sejo” (pronounced SAY-ho) for laying the tracks, and playing guitars for the song. Sejo’s buddy ripped on drums for this track. Got ‘er done in three takes. Check out Sejo’s band Vicious Licks (https://www.tradebit.com

Once the music tracks were completed, I sang and recorded the vocals at home. Special thanks to “Stooley” Mike for bringing your killer bong over for special effects. Were we “on a plane” or what?! Then I brought the vocals back to the studio for final mixing before getting mastered by legendary Dave Collins (https://www.tradebit.com) Thanks Dave! I was stoked to discover that Dave has mastered tunes for some of my fav’s including Motley Crue and Black Sabbath.

If your name is Fred Jabbar well there’s no relation to you real or implied. It’s just a fictitious name I conjured up. Just be glad people ‘round the world will be thinking of you every time a “cannabis cloud” goes by.

I’d love to hear from you-- Leave a comment. What’s your favorite lyric on this song? Thanks for listening. https://www.tradebit.com
