Cathari''s self-produced debut finally forces one of the most reclusive acts from the Omaha scene to emerge from under the concrete. Having spent the first three years of their career grinding tightly sequenced textures and industrial beats against operatiec vocals and celestial guitar, and the last three years improvising hor-long ambient dreamscapes, the end result is a smart and unexected mixture.
Cathari is a slow evocative blend of bass laden cadence, amber-colored synth, and guitar liquid enough to drink. Punctuated by the ashen voice of singer Morgan Solomon, with lyrics both whimsical and dark, the music balances post-modern catharsis with the hope for a new age.
From "Popeholder''s" lighthearted bass hook and hypnotic poly-rhythms to the delicate eleven-minute emotional weave of "Everything Before, After, and Since", cathari demonstrates a aptitude for combining sonic experimentation with a song oriented aesthetic. Like an ancent city, cathari contains structures familiar and mysterious, sinister and benign. Digging into those grey things we will one day call our future, cathari dwells on those moments one can''t quite explain, and perhaps doesn''t ever want to.
"Kind of like how Brian Eno influenced this album, cathari will be seen on lists of influences for decades to come."
