Music Bio
JR started playing the guitar at age 13. Growing up on Long Island in the ‘60’s, he formed numerous Folk music groups and started performing in Greenwich Village at folk music clubs. While he was studying for a bachelors in Classical Guitar and Music from Long Island University, he played in various Rock Groups in New York. His blues based band “Ralph” toured and opened for the Chambers Brothers in the late 60’s and he played on sessions with Buddy Miles after a performance at the renowned “Steve Paul’s Scene” in NYC at which time Jimi Hendrix heard the band and sent JR into the studio with Buddy Miles at Mercury Records on 57th St. in NYC.
After the band broke up, he moved to Europe where he continued his Classical Guitar Studies in Germany. Returning to the US and Washington DC in the 70’s, he continued studying Classical Guitar with John Marlowe at The American University and subsequently studied with Jose Tomas (main disciple of Andre Segovia), Carlos Barbosa Lima, and Michael Lorimer. After receiving a masters in education from AU and certification as a Music Therapist, JR founded a DC based recording Studio with his musical partner Zenon Slawinski. Sonic Images became a hotbed of creative music recording in the DC area and JR also scored numerous film, tv and commercial music projects. He and Zenon composed and released “Polarities” in the early ‘80’s and the Theme to the McGlaughlin Group TV Public affairs program which is still on the air to this day.
JR resides near Aspen Colorado and has a home studio where he composes music inspired by nature, other music of interest and the belief that the process of music is a healing experience.
