MP3 The Suspects - Things We Do

Described as the best band in Southern England, it''s pure indie rock and roll.

3 MP3 Songs
ROCK: Modern Rock, ROCK: 90''s Rock

Details:
The Suspects are:
Jim Oliver: Lead vocals and rhythm guitar
Andy Barraclough: Vocals and lead guitar
Steve Locke: Vocals and bass guitar
John Conaghan: Drums

How would you describe your style of music?
Steve: It’s original. We know that’s such a cliché and every band wants to say that but we’re not trying to do something that’s already out there. We’re not a Libertines wannabe, we’re The Suspects. I suppose you could say that we could be compared to the mid-90s'' ‘Brit / Indiepop’ era. That’s how we roll!

What would you say are your musical influences?

The Suspects
Steve: The good thing about each of us is that we’re influenced by different artist. Yeah we all like The Beatles and of course Oasis, as we grew up listening to them and going to their gigs (not The Beatles gigs of course). But individually Jim likes Richard Ashcroft and Pete Doherty, Andy likes ELO and Dusty Springfield, Steve likes Stereophonics and generally mainstream indie and John likes the ‘big dog’ Tim Westwood, P Diddy and Warren G!! So hopefully this enables a bit of variation and different ideas to be used for when we write our own stuff.

How did the band form?
Steve: We’re actually all old school friends and best mates. Some of us go back over 20 years! The self-proclaimed ‘founder’ of the band is Andy. He came up with the idea when we were about 17. We started out just messing about.

John’s first kit was made up of paint pots and empty cans of Super T in Andy’s garage. We played for about a year then it kinda fizzled out due to other commitments. Steve and John went travelling in order to ‘find themselves’, Jim set up his own allotment and Andy took up the study of foreign languages. But 14 months ago once we’d all done our thing, we decided to give it another crack and here we are today.

Of all the songs you have written, what’s your current favourite and why?
Steve: We all individually have our own favourite tracks for different reasons, again it’s a bit of a cliché to say that we are happy with every song we have done but we don’t care, there is something in every song that the majority of easy listeners will like. We all agreed that we would release Lost in a Daydream first if we had the chance, saying that we would release any of the songs given the chance. So... that is probably the roundabout answer to the question. Lost in a Daydream.

What type of gig do you most like to play and why?
Steve: We like playing all kinds of gigs whether it be local or a far. Lately the best gigs have been in London when we’ve headlined at places like the Barfly, Dublin Castle and The Orange Club. We’ve had great receptions and been received well enough to be asked back again. We all like London as its full of whacky and weird people of all fashions watching and acknowledging you! It’s all about getting that fan base and reputation at the moment. It’s hard work but we’re loving it.

What’s your most memorable gig and why?
Steve: Our most unforgettable gig so far was playing at the Milton Keynes Music 4U festival. There were over 3,000 people watching and our set was literally before England''s World Cup knock out game against Portugal being shown on a massive screen next to the stage. The atmosphere was great and excitement was all
around, then England went and lost, so it was a good job we played before the game as everyone''s spirits had dampened to say the least.

What’s your fan base like? What group of people would you say you appealed to most?
Steve: Our fan base is great. It’s important to remember the fans that come and support us regularly and those that have been with us since the beginning. We appeal to the mainstream. Those that just like good, honest music. If you like what you hear then come and see us. We like to think that we play catchy music that you’ll find yourself singing along to. So if that’s the case then we must be doing something right. After all that’s what sells records!

What’s the weirdest thing a fan has ever done / sent to you?
Steve: The weirdest thing we have ever seen was at one of our local gigs when a guy who shall be known only as ''a regular local music goer'' who was extremely inebriated got a little over excited during one of our songs, bustled his way to the front of the crowd below the stage and started to ''caterpillar''.

The guy knocked two girls clean over on the floor and cut his chin badly in the process so his manoeuvre was more of a slug. The bar staff picked him up and ejected him from the venue, we saw him a week later with what looked like a Wacaday plaster on his chin! It all goes off at our gigs!!

Name one unusual fact about each of you.
Jim thinks of himself as a mix of Tony Montana from Scarface and Gepetto from Pinocchio
Andy claims to know many foreign languages fluently. (claims)
Stephen does not highlight his hair grey contrary to popular belief
JC also claims to be Junior robotnix/beatbox/rap county champion 1994

If you could record a collaboration with ANYONE - who would it be and why?
Jim- I would like to work with Richard Ashcroft maybe even write a song with
him and grow tashes together.
Andy -I am not one for evoking the dead but I would like to collaborate with Elvis Presley if he wasn''t shot by a deranged fan, I would love to play guitar and duet with him
Stephen - I would like to work with the Stereophonics, but only if Nigel from Eastenders came back on drums.
JC - I would like to work with P-Diddy and be the Jaheim to an original COMBS/CONANGHAN collaboration. It could be the start of something BEAUITFUL.

What’s the band’s ultimate ambition or what’s your dream?
Steve: Our ambition and dream is to get signed and become one of the leading British bands. We want to sell records, tour Britain, America and the world. Simple as!

Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?!
Steve: Yeah, we’re just four local lads trying to catch a break in the record industry. For anyone reading this then support local music and get behind bands like ours. Listen to our music and if you like what you hear then come along to one of our gigs and check us out. You won’t be disappointed!

Tell us what you think of The Suspects!
