Sylvia Winsby- Jazz Vocalist, Composer

Inspired by the wild beauty of the Monterey Bay area, California, Shades of Green in Blue casts a new light on vocal jazz. The recording artfully blends her soulful voice with personally compelling songs in an impressive repertoire of jazz styles. Sylvia and ensemble skillfully shift the mood throughout the program from sensuous bossa novas to bonafide swing- from lush soul and blues infusions to tropical calypso. Cameo solos of flute and vibraphone compliment the excellent rhythm section. Fresh arrangements of standard gems and intriguing original songs keep the listener entranced.

Sylvia’s original compositions weave lyric and melody into one seamless canvas, evoking sensual imagery that connects the listener with personal stories of hope, spirit, and heart. Drawn from a deep well of life experience, the music resonates with our collective humanity. These new offerings to vocal jazz sparkle like sunlight across the ocean.

“It’s so seldom you hear someone sing with vulnerability…in Sylvia, I hear a lovely innocence- it’s wonderful, don’t change a thing.”
Mark Murphy, Jazz Vocalist, 6 time Grammy Nominee

“Sylvia sounded so wonderful!! Keep singing!”
Nancy King, Jazz Vocalist, ‘06 Grammy Nominee

“Sylvia has a knack for bringing out the true essence of a song with her sensitive musical interpretation.“
Murray Low, Jazz Pianist, Grammy Nominee

Sylvia''s multi-hued vocal palette delivers the emotion of songs with a refreshing vibrancy. Her authentic command of rhythm, phrasing, texture and dynamics reveals the voice is this jazz musician’s instrument. Whether conveying the story of a familiar tune or one of her original compositions, Sylvia takes us to an aural movie where we connect with the heart and soul of our universal human experience. In composition and performance, her work demonstrates commitment to beauty and the innovative spark that keeps jazz alive.

Composing songs for most of her adult life, Sylvia comments on the human condition and gives voice to common experiences beyond the realm of romance. She observes our interface with the natural world, personal growth, and the emotional prism of daily life. Her composition style includes a range of influences from Joni Mitchell, Laura Nyro, and Stevie Wonder, to Hoagy Carmichael, Jobim, and Miles Davis. Inspired by the few recognized women jazz vocalist composers, e.g. Abbey Lincoln, Peggy Lee, & Billie Holiday, Sylvia desires to contribute to the ‘great American songbook’ repertoire of jazz.

A girl who grew up on an apple ranch in northern California, she was nurtured by a lifestyle in tune with the seasonal colors and rhythms of the natural world. Discipline over time formed the pearl of her artistry. Her style grew from a rich education and performance background in the genres of classical, folk, soul and blues. After a divorce and time of single parenthood, she immersed herself in an extensive jazz education. Sylvia studied with two of the greatest living jazz vocalists, Mark Murphy and Nancy King. She attended The Jazzschool in Berkeley, CA., Stanford Jazz Workshop, CA, and Port Townsend Jazz Workshop, WA. Her improvisation skills were nurtured by founding members of Bobby McFerrin’s Voicestra, Rhiannon and Joey Blake. Sylvia performs in the Monterey Bay area, CA, including such venues as Kuumbwa Jazz Center, Santa Cruz, CA.

In 2006, Sylvia established her publishing company and independent recording label, Indigo Dream Music. Through a year’s labor, her first CD project, Shades of Green in Blue, was completed. This self-produced gem, released in May, 2007, will be a welcome addition to the listening collections of jazz fans with a thirst for new creative voices.
