The VibeSetters are a Rock n'' Reggae Jazzfunk group who have just recently made Santa Cruz, California their hometown after a not so easy decision to leave their island refuge of St. John in the Caribbean. The sound that The VibeSetters lay down is a healthy dose of funky rural electronic reggae rock rhythms applied with urban jazz and hip hop sensibilities which respect the past, celebrate the present and give promise to the future of music. Their simple, yet textural rhythm based songs have attracted an enthusiastic and eclectic audience to date with positive responses to the music from around the globe. A listener from Stockholm, Sweden feels:
"This is not traditional reggae. It is refreshing and mystic. A litte bit moviesoundtrackstyle. Puts me in a state of euphoria."
Living in the US Virgin Islands shaped the sound of the band to reflect the sometimes tumultuous conditions created by the struggle between urban progress and preserving paradise. Sensing how people can be uplifted from violence, poverty, sickness and discrimination through the inspiration of music, The VibeSetters set upon a mission of equity, justice and peace for all beings. Taking their music to the mainland has enabled the message and positive vibrations to reach more people.
The VibeSetters second record "Rock n'' Reggae Jazzfunk" was recorded on the island of St. John in the US Virgin Islands and in Santa Cruz, CA. As a result, the island influences mix with the west coast sensibilities to produce a healthy mix of rocking island reggae with jazzy electronic dreamscapes.
In this century there have been no top 20 instrumental songs to hit the charts in the United States. Out of the the last 7 top 20 instrumentals in the last century, Kenny G has blown on 4 of them. The VibeSetters are convinced that the pop charts hold no place for an instrumental rock and reggae album whose longest track clocks in at well over 50 minutes long. The final track on the album ''Rock n'' Reggae Jazzfunk'', ''Soundtrack to Obstickle!'', is a journey of immense proportions through a sonic soundscape which quickly and captivatingly propels the listener from ambient galactic Pink Floydian impressions to electronic soul jazz to groovy rock reminiscent of Frank Zappa''s quirkier early 70''s jazz-rock excursions and back again through some psychedelic meditation device like a John Lennon Revolution #9 audio hallucination collage.
The VibeSetters explain that "moving the emotions of people to create positive, forward action can only be accomplished with art that speaks beauty and Truth. Action is necessary to alleviate universal suffering and most top 20 songs do not inspire folks to take action against injustice."
"Whenever we play music we keep in mind the old admonition that art should be in the altering of objects by human skills to answer the purpose intended. And the purpose of much proper art is to bring the mind to rest so that the mind is raised above desire and loathing. We alter soundwaves to create music so the focus can become on the positive and help reveal the truth that we all are responsible for the well being of everyone on this planet."
The Vibesetters music does keep the mind active yet passive by guiding a visually relaxing journey with their soundscape of propulsion. The mind has not moments to grow restless. The next thought is entertained and the next path is followed onward towards the inevitable conclusion. After listening to this album, you may not be ready to give up your current life and fight to change the world but, you will at least be more willing to entertain the thought.
