Audra Brown

Singer Songwriter Guitarist

Born in May of 1991, Audra grew up listening to her parent’s rock and roll and listening to her father’s original songs. She got a heavy dose of southern rock and loved Lynyrd Skynyrd, Nirvana, Warren Zevon and the Drive-By Truckers. She started composing songs in the spring of 2003. She got to meet the Drive-By Truckers in May 2003 and quickly became friends with the band. Patterson Hood became her email pal, discussing rock and roll, his songs and growing up experiences with her. Then in October of 2003, the band asked her to sing their song Zip City on stage with them in Memphis at Newby’s. IT was a night to remember. This night was captured for all in a review published in the Memphis Flyer Issue 779. She had just begun teaching herself to play guitar but that night cemented her future of songwriting and playing live.

In 2004, she attended the Southern Girls Rock n Roll Camp at MTSU in Murfreesboro, TN. (https://www.tradebit.com) This was an amazing experience as she met 80 other talented girls her age and got the opportunity to interact with music professionals for 6 days. Her band, The Vintage Tattoos played an original song, co-written by Audra at the end of camp showcase. This led to more inspiration, more dedication and continued the flow of passion from Audra into her songs.

Audra’s songwriting intensified and her guitar and singing talents grew as well. She began playing at Memphis Originals regularly eventually being asked to host the weekly Open Mic on Monday nights. (https://www.tradebit.com) While attending a Drive-By Trucker show in Oxford, MS on April 22 of 2005, the band once again asked her to join them on stage and sing Zip City. She had been featured on the bands’ fan tribute cd with two of her 13 year old girl bandmates performing Zip City earlier in the spring. (https://www.tradebit.com)

In the summer of 2005, Audra returned to the Southern Girls Rock and Roll Camp in Murfreesboro, TN. This time, she was ready to roll. At camp, Audra formed the band Raise Raze Rays and they played one of her original songs at the showcase. “Highest Level” with Audra singing and playing guitar was the highlight of the week-ending showcase and garnered much publicity and attention her way. You can hear the live performance of this song at https://www.tradebit.com

She has performed at the Bartlett Performing Arts Center (https://www.tradebit.com) in their local youth talent show Bartlett Starzz, the Stage Stop, Bartlett Celebration and many other venues. One of the highlights of this year was performing at the Star Center Kidsfest in Jackson, TN (https://www.tradebit.com) where she donated a song to the center and all future proceeds from it. She raised over $200 at the event by selling copies of the song and touched the heart of the founder.

2006 was another year of inspiration, writing, learning and perfecting her craft. While continuing to write and play live, she started recording her first CD at Voxbox Studio with producer Paul Berkes. Audra played all the guitar parts and did all the vocals. She also got to play with some talented people including Todd Snider’s bass player, Joe Mariencheck, local violin great Greg Easterley and Hall of Fame songwriter Richard Ford.

The 2006 Southern Girls Rock and Roll Camp showcase featured Audra’s band, Try a Little Harder, and the original song “Skeleton In The Closet”. This performance was featured on local TV Channel 5.

In 2006, Audra got involved with the local “Save Libertyland” group, playing at several events, press conferences, rallies and fundraisers. She will be featured in an upcoming documentary by Michael McCarthy about the Libertyland debacle. She continues to be active with this group.

Audra also organized the local Musickfest 2006, a fund raiser for Wendy Musick of Athens, Georgia and the band Southern Bitch. Wendy had major surgery and had no insurance. Her friends in Athens organized a show and Audra saw it and did the same thing in Memphis. Wendy was at Audra’s first DBT on –stage performance and helped her and took care of her. She remains one of Audra’s closet music friends.

Currently, Audra plays almost 200 original songs. At a live performance, either solo or with her band, she will tell you about how she got arrested at her first concert, how she met Jason Isbell, singing on-stage at Newby’s, the rock and roll camp, etc.

In the fall of 2007, she will begin her junior year at Overton High School in Memphis. She is an honor student, enrolled in the creative writing program. She plays first base on her fast pitch softball team, enjoys playing cards, spending time with friends and writing all the time!

Wow, that is a lot for a 16 year old!!!
