Eden Smith was born in Fort Worth, Texas. When she was six years old she was watching a symphony perform on TV and was mesmerized by the cellos. She pointed to them and said, "I want to play that." So, at the ripe age of seven, Eden picked up the cello. Besides the traumatic experience of a string popping in the middle of a performance, she enjoyed playing the instrument. Eden also broke into the music world vocally at the age of eight, performing a rendition of "You Can''t Get a Man with a Gun," which brought the entire audience to their feet. But who wouldn''t give props to the only participant in a school-wide talent show who didn''t lip-sync?
Her career took off at that point. Eden happened upon the guitar in an interval of two years during which she could not find a cello teacher. And so, as a sixth grader, she began writing songs on the guitar, writing them on hole-punched notecards she put in the little red binder she had used for spanish flashcards the year before. She marked the outside "CLASSIFIED." She didn''t really know what that meant, but she had seen it stamped in red on files that no one was supposed to see. Besides an occasional leak to a close friend or pet (Maggie), her songs stayed that way — "classified".
Eden began taking voice lessons in middle school, singing duets about "sounding trumpets" and who-knows-what in foreign languages. And she loved it. She found that she had something very unique to offer through her voice and her presence as she sang. As she approached high school graduation, her voice fully developed and she participated regularly in voice competitions. Her repertoire was filled, again, with songs in foreign languages and opera ballads, but she enjoyed singing Debussy the most for his emotive and haunting melodies.
College (in St. Louis) was a musically saturated experience for Eden. She dabbled in all sorts of different genres (a capella, opera, folk, etc). She would write songs in spurts. In 2 months, she''d write 20 songs, and then, the next 2 years her guitar would collect dust. Music was something she loved and hated. Loved because it was her fullest way of expressing herself and connecting with others. Hated because it was what she truly wanted to pursue, but it was easier to hate something than to face the call to risk for it.
After college she spent a year back in Texas, before moving up to Seattle, where she finally decided to risk for her passion. There is definitely no turning back now for Eden.
After playing around the Northwest and making her rounds in Texas as a singer songwriter, Eden began recording her first album, "Spoonfuls," Spring of 2007. With that, she has also begun performing full band.
