Legendary Guitarist, Phil Upchurch & Sensational Vocalist, Sonya Maddox-Upchurch
For the first time in legendary guitarist Phil Upchurch''s career, Sonya Maddox is now recognized as his first writing partner. The timbre of her voice and style of language rings perfectly with my intricate combination of chords. Sonya completes me, "says Upchurch."
Herb Alpert was left mesmerized by Maddox and immediately offered Sonya his stage at Vibrato. Stevie Wonder says her passion and style is as dramatic as Nancy Wilson''s.

Sonya Maddox, CEO of WONDERVISION Music & Entertainment, has the grace and charm of a southern belle coupled with the confidence and allure of a Hollywood diva. This Atlanta-born, television, screen, and stage actor/songstress has become one of the most sought after, respected performers in the commercial arena. With over 200 commercials to her credit, corporate America loves the essence she brings to their projects. Her most recent commercials include Listerine, Viactive, Walmart, Honey Bunches of Oats, Home Depot, and South Beach Diet. In addition to her acting, Sonya''s musical career is on the fast track, performing both on screen and to live audiences.
Sonya''s first starring screen role was in the award-winning Hanelle Culpepper film "A Single Rose", which made it to the 12th cut for the 2005 Oscar awards. Maddox received national acclaim for her portrayal of the character Rose. In addition, Sonya performed three songs for the film.
Sonya is the only African American actress to have a speaking role in “Spider-Man 3.” Maddox also wrote and starred in Wonder, an autobiographical one-woman show. She wrote and sang all the lyrics for the productions score. Sonya continues to perform her music with a renewed sense of purpose.
Sonya joined forces with music legends Phil Upchurch and Howard McCray. "TRULY, CD" is produced independently by WONDERVISION Entertainment & Music all of the songs are by far, original.
As a classically trained singer, Sonya has been in the spotlight since the age of six, performing in musicals and classical choirs in both Atlanta and Los Angeles. She is a graduate of Atlanta''s Northside School of Performing Arts, where she was given the opportunity to sing with a select group of performers in Mozart''s "Vespare Soleness de Confessore." Sonya continues to perform her music, today with a renewed sense of purpose.
Throughout her career, Sonya has been a leader in the entertainment community. Over the past 14 years, Sonya Maddox, the actor has held various positions as a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) National Board Member including a seat on the Board of Directors, Chair, National Women''s Committee, Chair, African American Subcommittee, and Chair, Equal Employment Opportunity Committee (exec), in Atlanta. Her natural leadership ability, dynamic personality, and dedication have furthered the careers of innumerable actors of color and affected significant, positive change in their representation both in SAG/AFTRA memberships and in the media at large. During her tenure, Sonya lobbied to get diverse actors involved in the guild; orchestrated seminars to teach actors their contractual rights; petitioned the media to diversify union and actor representation; and, as a result of her leadership, the world witnessed the SAG/AFTRA African American subcommittee grow from a membership of 12 to approximately 1,000. Sonya Maddox, the singer is also an active member of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP).
Believing whole-heartedly that entertainment is her ministry; Sonya enjoys opportunities to participate in community outreach and motivational speaking. She makes frequent visits to elementary schools and theatre programs to speak to children about careers in the arts encouraging them to realize their potential.
Sonya was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. The youngest of four, two boys and two girls, she maintains extremely close ties to her family. Though, she now lives "across the country." Sonya counts on the support of her Father, the Dean of Atlanta City Council; and Mother, a retired first grade teacher of Atlanta''s school district, to keep her grounded in her southern roots. As she describes, "my parents have always given me a reason to rise to the top and be my best. They have been hands-on my entire life and have dedicated themselves to seeing me fulfill my dreams...and, I love them so much for everything they have done for me and our family."
As Sonya continues to soar in Hollywood, CA. Atlanta, GA will always be in her heart and that spirit beneath her wings.
The Phil Upchurch Scholarship Fund in which Sonya and Phil are founders. Focus on the awareness and importance of true jazz in today''s music. The Phil Upchurch scholarship foundation was founded as a way to honor my friend Jimmy Smith. one of the world''s greatest jazz pioneers." both Upchurch and Maddox (who have teamed on numerous projects around Los Angeles) are excited and honored to pay homage to one of the worlds most influential jazz organists of all time. The scholarships provide financial assistance to talented high school-aged musicians who may not otherwise have the resources to further their musical studies. Contributions of such a great jazz legend alive, and at the same time, provide financial assistance to talented high school-aged musicians who may not otherwise have the resources to further their musical studies.
Phil''s Favorite Influence:
Jimmy Smith, who began his career in the early 1950''s, is known for his clean, volcanic executions, in the tradition of Charlie Parker. Smith single-handedly, in 1956, brought to prominence the Hammond B-3 organ, as a solo voice in the jazz world. He revolutionized the jazz organ, turning what was for the most part, an overlooked instrument into one of the most inclusive, dynamic jazz instruments of all time. Being credited with creating the distinctive sound of "soul jazz," Smith was also the recipient of the prestigious jazz master''s lifetime achievement award from the national endowment for the arts, the nation''s highest honor in jazz. Smith died at age 79 at his home in Scottsdale, AZ, in February of this year. He has over 100 albums to his credit.

Chicago guitar great Phil Upchurch – now a longtime Los Angelino - recently wed a woman he calls his muse – a lovely young singer named Sonya Maddox. Before their nuptials, the couple birthed a beautiful 6-song valentine EP CD they call Truly that will warm your heart. Filled with love songs for the soul, the CD provides an intimate glance into the world of lovers in their ups and downs. Highlights include “Silent Whispers,” “Paradise,” “Barcelona” and the heart-stopping title track, “Truly” (an Upchurch instrumental now wonderfully vocalized).

UPCHURCH AND MADDOX
TO START MARRIAGE AND MUSIC MINISTRY: Couple vows to bring change to celebrity marriages through music ministry
Phil Upchurch & Sonya Maddox
While legendary Jazz guitarist Phil Upchurch was plucking love notes from his guitar strings, actress and singer Sonya Maddox was strumming his heart strings.
The pair will wed on Tuesday, June 13, 2006 in a private ceremony to be held at Crenshaw Christian Center (CCC) in Los Angeles, CA with family and friends from Atlanta, Chicago, and L.A. in attendance. Their nuptials will be officiated by Pastor and Founder of CCC, Frederick K.C. Price, D.D.
They both share a passion for God and music and plan to start a couples’ music ministry to share the gospel to combat the high rate of divorce for those in the entertainment industry Maddox says.
Maddox 40 and Upchurch 65 both share a love for music and collaborated on a new CD entitled "Truly." Sonya was his first writing partner and the project is how they met. She has never been married, but believes God has sent her the right man in the right season of her life. It took the frosty-haired suitor three years to woo the "love of his life." Phil beams, "I''ve found my dream girl, a gift from God, my hero. . . Sonya is my everything."
In addition to the marriage ministry, and their music careers, the couple plans to start a family. Phil''s spiritual leader is Pastor Cecil L. Murray and plays guitar the first and third Sunday of every month in the music ministry at First AME Church in Los Angeles. Sonya''s spiritual leader is Pastor Fred Price at Crenshaw Christian Center, where Upchurch also visits.
