BIO

“I chose the Blues because to me it’s the most versatile of all music. I really enjoy playing and performing the Blues and making people happy.”

At the young age of 6 years old, while watching T. V., Aubrey was inspired by the saxophonist who played in the Bill Doggett’s band. This exposure led to his learning to play the saxophone by studying the playing styles of such saxophone greats like Hank Crawford, Junior Walker, King Curtis, John Coltrane, Grover Washington, Jr., Cannonball Adderly, Arnett Cobb, and Welton Felder to name a few. As a 15 year old teenager, (with permission from his parents), in 1964 he began to play in night clubs with different bands learning the art of Blues, Soul, and Jazz music.

Born and reared in Houston, Tx. – Home of the great saxophone sound given to the world by Houston saxophone greats like Arnett Cobb, Welton Felder, and Grady Gains – Aubrey developed his big robust sound on the saxophone that dazzles audiences and stimulates emotions that creates the mood with smooth tantalizing sounds.

Steady growing and maturing in his musical style, Aubrey studied and received a B. A. Degree in Instrumental Music Education and a Teacher’s Certificate from Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas. Through his studies and experiences, Aubrey began developing his singing style and stage persona, while drawing from his experiences when he played in the Johnny Clyde Copeland Soul Agents Band. He went on to play with other Blues greats like Z. Z. Hill, Little Johnny Taylor, Gatemouth Brown, and Buddy Ace to name a few.

After the break up of his marriage, Aubrey wrote a song entitled, “I Used To Be A Dog, Baby,” for Johnny Copeland to sing. But when Aubrey decided to form his own Blues band, “Aubrey Dunham & The Party Machine,” he recorded his first Blues CD entitled, “Now, I’m Singing The Blues,” featuring the song he wrote for Johnny, “I Used To Be A Dog, Baby.” In this CD Aubrey combines traditional Blues styles with funk blues rhythms.

On July 3, 1997 the day Johnny Copeland passed on, Aubrey Bluesdog Dunham was scheduled as his back up band in San Antonio, Tx.

Aubrey’s latest CD Project, “I Feel Your Love,” is in honor of Johnny Clyde Copeland. It contains some of Johnny’s favorite hits performed by Aubrey Bluesdog Dunham including “Life’s Rainbow” performed on alto saxophone as well as the song “I Feel Your Love” and other originals written by Aubrey and other friends of Johnny.

“My inspiration to make this CD came from the spirit of my friend and mentor, Johnny Clyde Copeland, The Blues Ambassador.”Aubrey Bluesdog Dunham is making a monumental impact on the Blues market. His CD, “I Feel Your Love,” A Special Tribute To Johnny Clyde Copeland, champions his artistry and professionalism.
