Music has always been a part of my being. When I was smaller, my dad sat me in front of the speakers of his stereo. I have always had an interest in music, but I did not begin to pursue what was inside of me all along until the end of high school.
I began playing gospel music and I have been playing ever since. After 141/2 years of using my gift, I know this is my passion, my love, and my profession. Gospel music opened the door for me to begin exploring my gift. I consider it my “backbone”. I played for my first church at the age of 20. Playing, teaching vocals, and mending voice parts together to make beautiful sounds was my mission. As I began to play, my skills as a keyboardist began to blossom. I started to become a confident musician and I realized that I had a tremendous contribution in the music field.
As the years passed, people began to know who I was. That was really cool to me. I really enjoyed playing gospel music, but I wanted to try something different. Many people have said that I have a jazzy style, so I started to listen to several different jazz artists. I began studying Duke Ellington, Nat King Cole, Jimmy Smith, Stevie Wonder, and the list goes on and on. I then began to develop my own “feel” for jazz music. My own sound began to surface. Some people have even told me that I have a signature sound. I really thought that was cool.
I really began to find myself as a jazz musician. That’s where my project originated. I already had some decent musical equipment and I was knowledgeable on certain equipment that could enhance my idea of this jazz project. I started mapping out my ideas and the music just started to flow out of me. The project started in June of 06, and I completed it at the beginning of December. During my “work in progress”, I learned some tricks of the trade. I learned how to do sound conditioning, production, and mastery of music. I set a goal by which to have my project completed. I missed it by 6 days. I was upset about it at first, but it turned out for the best.
This project has been an extremely intense experience. I really feel that when the world hears my music, they will be blessed with creative sounds that are straight from my heart.
