This CD is so good it makes me wanna jump and holler. AIIIIIEEEEEHHHHHHH!!! There, I said it. I feel better now. These cats are talented players. They mix it up pretty dern good on this CD. Dave Weil (guitar and vocals) writes some great rockin'' originals featuring two guitarist that play around each other beautifully with out getting in each others way. This is a feat not easily accomplished, often times two guitar bands tend to drown out the vocals and melody in a sea of wang and distortion. Guitarists Weil and and Johnny Knox avoid the potential roadblocks and blend their instruments well. This facet is especially noticeable on the first three cuts: "Rockabilly Show", the very bouncin'' "I''m A Lover" and the swingin'' "Hold Back". This is some of the best rockabilly guitar pickin'' I''ve heard that DIDN"T come from California or Texas. If ya'' don''t believe me just listen to their cut of "Knoxville Slim". But they DON''T just play rockabilly, they rock n'' roll, country, western, blues, cajun and jazz it up pretty dern good too. This music sounds intrinsic to the souls of the musicians playing it...like good rockabilly should.
"Make Mine A Double" has a great live feel and sound. When I hear their cut of "Put Me Down" I can''t help but feel like I''m seeing these guys play in a loud smoky bar somewhere down south of the Mason-Dixon. They are a four piece but they sprinkle in just the right amount of piano, organ and accordion on a few cuts in just the right places on this release. If I dim the the lights during the song "I Don''t Care" I have to turn them back on again because the combination of shadow and musical tone makes me suddenly afraid of the dark. The tune "Remember Love" makes me want to catch a beer buzz, throw some peanut shells on the floor and waltz with my baby across the kitchen. The tune "Steamroller" makes me wanna jump in my big old gas guzzling ''67 Buick and drive somewhere...really fast. The tune "No Time to Lose" makes me wanna name my first born son "Jerry Reed" O''Bryan. (On second thought maybe I''ll just settle for a crawdad dinner.) "This Place I Know" is a tune that brings back (not so) distant memories of raucous house parties gone awry. Not only do these cats rock on their original material they do a few of the greats justice covering them as well. They cover Cash ("Your My Baby"), Holly ("Love Me") and do the best cover of Johnny Horton''s "Honky-Tonk Hardwood Floor" that I''ve ever heard any band dare to put on a recording.
This CD is so good it''s hot. Man it sizzles. It''s yummy like grits and sausage! I have not had the fortune of hearing their first release (What''ll Ya Have?) but it''s bound to sizzle too! This is a hot band. I don''t know if they get away from Atlanta much so ya''ll get a copy of this CD and get a taste of this real live road house rockabilly before I eat it all up myself.
