Oh, great! Just what the world needs: more music that''s impossible to categorize. One local wag suggested Mike Chrisman''s music should be described as "post-neo-punk-folk." Mike himself offers: "punk-folk-political-cowboy-reggae-luv songs, with a rock ''n'' roll undertow." His influences include - but are not limited to - Buddy Holly, Ian & Sylvia, Richard Thompson, Chuck Berry, Greg Brown, Chrissie Hynde, Mark Knopfler, Joan Jett, the band Morphine, Barbara Keith, David Byrne, and -- of course -- Dylan.
The 13 songs on Mike''s CD reflect all the above influences; the strong thread uniting them is Mike''s songwriting. Literate, often humorous, poignant, and powerful, his lines reward the listener with fresh ways to observe the human condition. Rebekah Boyd-Owens, writing for The West County News, observes, "...this committed songwriter ... composes on the backs of many genres and comes up with originals that stick." Mike, who received a Master of Fine Arts degree in poetry from UMass, concludes, "My songs are poems accompanied by a kick-ass band."
