Brother Rabbit Speaks (1992) is the first solo release from a young Peter Mulvey. Fresh from his days as a member of local Milwaukee band Big Sky, his early songs are heartfelt and tuneful. There''s a bit of everything that would come later: spoken word, instrumentals, studio innovation, multiple guests, and a tendency to veer into quirky left-field terrain.
Rain, his second solo release, is a live show recorded at the Helfaer Theater just a year or so later. His move to Boston and the attendant exposure to a wide range of musicians and writers is just beginning to show in the songwriting, and the songs include a few that would blossom into the full-fledged versions heard on his first two national releases.
Originally released separately, and re-released as a two-cd package in 2001, the two records form a portrait of a young man finding his feet in a wide river of influences.
