The Red Cotton - Dead End.
it featured 3 tracks:

all of which have been remade for the debut album - Memory Card.
This is a review on the Red Cotton''s EP, taken
from Subculture Magazine - London:
Every so often when you think you cant be surprised by music any more,
there will come along some little know band you least expect, catching you off guard.
And the bite delivered by THE RED COTTON was literally so hard it made me exclaim.
And an exclamation of joy it was, mind you. I still cant get over how amazing the Dead End EP is because
it just isnt what you would expect a band of this era to make.
The Red Cotton make music with such mastery that Im sure if Ian Curtis were here now,
hed be a fan. No kidding. On first listen its obvious this band which hails from Israel
is in fact highly influenced by Joy Division – but, and this is the part to take note of:
Unlike the multitude of bands out there who take the term "influence" to mean "copy and paste",
The Red Cotton take a smattering of Joy Division, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Cure and even Depeche Mode –
all in terms of their general sound, but then infuse it with their very own style of self-despair and
pessimistic outlook on life.
The first track, "Euphoria" is, unlike what the title might suggest, only a semi-happy song,
with a mid-tempo rhythm of western guitars – just think of a mesh up between "Atrocity Exhibition"
and "Just Cant Get Enough". It is certainly the only one that hints a certain degree of happiness,
perhaps a preparation for the audience to the extreme self-flagellation to follow.
The next track is "Civilization" – and just one listen tells me this is a song that is going to be a classic
in time to come, no question about that. The guitars that start off set the mood from the beginning,
a delicate build up of mixed emotion. But when the opening line of How do I set myself free? is uttered,
you know hopelessness is the central theme to this beautiful song. Simply a 10 stars out of 5 kind of song
– i.e. the kind that comes around once every decade.
By the time you reach to the third track, "I Hate To Be Alive",
you will be convinced The Red Cotton are THE next big thing to come.
This reminds me a lot of "Day Of The Lords", the way the song is composed:
The build up of the slow drums, the ominous sound of the recurring rhythm of the guitar,
the melancholy vocals that by the fourth minute of the six minute song, bursts into a life of its own,
only again to become subdued… and somehow leaving me hanging, to draw my own conclusions about what happens next.
This song is an emotional rollercoaster, starting with extreme sadness that builds to uncontrolled anger,
which then subdues to a certain depthless despair. From lyrics that go from I need to run away to fly to I dont
know what Ive got to ending with At times Im laying in my bed reflecting my problems from end to end,
it is an epic story the band have somehow managed to tell in the short six minutes.
In fact, according to the band, the title of this EP expresses the feeling that they have reached a dead
end with what they can achieve in Israel to the point of there being nowhere else to go.
The band is now ready to relocate and move on to fulfil their dreams of getting their
music out there to the greater audience. And my response to that is thank you – because
the only thing I am disappointed with here is that this EP only contains three tracks.
We want more and we want it right now!
