This is a band dedicated to the Salsa music. They have played with well recognized artists like Cheo Feliciano and the Philharmonic Orchestra of Costa Rica; some of them are also part of Ruben Blades’s band. Their musical director, Walter Flores, has been directing the “Editus Ensemble” for Ruben Blades for more than 5 years, with this band he has played at places like: Concertgebouw Theater in Amsterdam, “La Villette JazzFest” in Paris, “Westport JazzFest” in Germany, Montreaux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, “Playboy Jazz Festival” in Los Angeles, “Sessions at 54th” in New York and “Carnegie Hall”, among others. Additionally, Flores was the arranger for the song “Dilo de una vez” (“Say it at once”) from Humberto Vargas, which won in 2006 one of the most prestigious music festivals in Latin America, “Viña del Mar” (Chile).
Flores has also earned 3 Grammy Awards as “Producer and Sound Engineer” for the recordings “Mundo” and “Tiempos” from Ruben Blades, here Alfredo Poveda (lead singer for Son de Tikizia) recorded the second voice for Blades and played trombone, you can hear his voice next to Ruben’s on the song “Como nosotros” from “Mundo”, where Flores also executes a Flute solo. Son the Tikizia counts with very experienced musicians. The idea with this project is to rescue the Salsa music that was made during the 70’s and early 80’s, where every orchestra had its own sound and it was the style imprinted by every musician what gave the feeling to each song. Additionally this band is characterized for its explosiveness during each presentation, where the “moñas” and “solos” from each instrument give meaning to the real sense of live music.

No importa si el pie es plano o es un pie de imprenta. Tampoco se especifica si hay que andar con pies de plomo o a pies juntillas. Menos si se empieza con el pie izquierdo o si la cosa es a cuatro pies.
Lo cierto es que el primer disco compacto del grupo Son de Tikizia está hecho para mover los pies y de allà que su nombre de batalla sea tan preciso y directo y, como para no dejar duda alguna flotando en el aire (ni en la pista), los músicos decidieron bautizar su primer criatura como Salsa Dura. Pa’ los pies .
Un disco esperado. El grupo Son de Tikizia no apareciĂł como por arte de magia. Su historia es un claro ejemplo de lo que significa un proceso aplicado a cualquier proyecto, incluyendo el futbol, aunque parece que en ese tema nadie entiende y seguimos vendiendo copos en lugar de traernos una buena copa.
Alfredo Poveda y Wálter Flores, trombĂłn y piano respectivamente, se unieron hace como tres años para un proyecto de Nerina Carmona, presentado en El Farolito. Se llamaron en ese momento Trombones en Salsa, con mĂşsica original de Poveda. Luego se le sumĂł un especial con mĂşsica de RubĂ©n Blades y otro con mĂşsica de Los Seis del Solar. Para ese entonces el grupo ya tenĂa percusiones.
Luego vino Maestra vida, presentada en el antiguo bar Meridiano al Este y, aunque en aquel momento los antiguos responsables del lugar les pidieron no más espectáculos improvisados como ese porque nadie bailaba, Son de Tikizia nació.
¡ImagĂnense, improvisar Maestra vida ! Eso no es posible y el esfuerzo de los mĂşsicos por montar toda la Ăłpera-salsa de RubĂ©n Blades motivĂł a consolidar una orquesta de salsa como la que se hacĂa en los años 70. Por casualidad, el grupo Los Brillanticos se deshizo y Wálter y Alfredo llamaron a algunos de sus integrantes. El grupo estaba armado hasta los dientes y los mĂşsicos salieron decididos a conquistar los pies de la capital.
Poco a poco fueron sumando al repertorio de los temas clásicos de la época de Oro de la Salsa, algunas composiciones originales.

Going straight to the feet could be easy, but making a production in a complex genre like salsa (because of the feeling and the structures) and making it fine is quite an accomplishment. The “ticos” (this is how Costa Ricans are known) assembled an album with twelve very enjoyable but elegant songs. To add more points: it includes one borrowed song from Ruben Blades called “Juan Gonzalez”; they are offering a re-digestion of a composition from Bach (Goldberg Variations, variation n.18); and all the arrangements from Walter Flores are fine and appropriate (well, for these reasons he has won two Grammy awards).
Alfredo Poveda’s voice is a luxury: like few ones for salsa and proudly Costa Rican!!
