WORLD: Celtic

Details:
Sheila Stratton-Peel

Sheila is a vocalist/soloist, arranger, and percussionist. She performs with the bodhran, the traditional Irish drum. Sheila has played with a number of Celtic bands in the Western New York area including Iad Fein. She is now affiliated with the Lochside Celtic Band and Duo.

As a performer Sheila is also a member of a 70'', 80''s, 90"s, Blues and light Jazz group called "Fear Of Moving Parts". The band consists of Michael Nowicki, Justin Caldwell, Jason Rimes and Sheila Stratton-Peel. Great group, great sound.

As a performer, Sheila has shared the bill with touring artists such as Brendan Nolan, Beth Patterson, Andy M. Stewart, Gerry O''Bierne and others. Sheila has performed at Buffalo''s premiere Irish music venue, The Shannon Pub, and also appears regularly in Rochester, Batavia, and other towns in Western New York. She also performs at Gene McCarthy''s Irish Pub and Restaurant in Buffalo''s Old First Ward and at Ulrich''s Tavern in Buffalo, NY on a regular basis. During festival season there were performances at the Dayton Celtic Festival and the Amherst Scottish Festival. She also appears at the Fort Erie Celtic Festival, Fergus Scottish Festival, Niagara Celtic Heritage Festival and Highland Games, and the Rochester Irish Festival.

There have been many performances at festivals this year. Fort Erie Celtic Festival, Fort Erie, Ontario, Canada, The Niagara Celtic Heritage Festival and Highland Games in Olcott, NY, The Amherst Scottish Festival, The Rochester Irish Festival, The Buffalo Riverfest, and the Dayton Celtic Festival in Dayton, OH. What a great year for festivals. And now I am scheduled for many of them, more on that in the future.

Notably, the Niagara Celtic Heritage Festival in Olcott, NY on September 16 & 17 2006 was one of the best festivals of the year. It was its 6th year and it really kicked butt with attendence and the entertainment that was provided at the event was outstanding. The sound production by Lakeside Sound (Tom Keefer) was the best for any event in which I have performed in this year. I was asked to be a spokeperson for the festival and entertained on local cable tv; one of my signature songs, Siuil A Ruin. A song that is both in Irish and English about a lost love.

Sheila has published a CD called "Celtic Song and Story". This CD was released on December 01, 2005. Sheila has now completed a new CD of her own called "Celtic Lady of the Lake".

My new CD, Celtic Lady of the Lake is published. Tom Keefer, Lakeside Sound, produced this CD from his new studio. My fellow band mates, Norm Bock, Tom Keefer, and Norm''s daughter Natalie have been recording with me of late. One of the songs that will be featured is: Ride On, this song was composed by Jimmy McCarthy from Ireland and is a very haunting tune. Other songs include The Fisherman Song by Andy M. Stewart and the last song of any performance, The Parting Glass.

Preserving The heritage
Doing a "classic" amongst the traditionals is daring. I''ve heard this song being done live by Clannad, Kylian and others.

Still, I did like the performance. The vocals are quite okay, as are the interventions of the backing vocals. I did like the fact that this is a piece of “honest” recording, as good as no handling of the sound except from some EQ-ing perhaps.

You asked for comments on the lyrics: as I already said this is a traditional, people like you do preserve the heritage.
