Zeke Aguilar was born and raised in the border town of Brownsville, Texas amidst an eclectic backdrop of blues, rock, jazz, latino and mexican music. He was raised in a musical home. His dad played trumpet, tuba, bass, guitar and dabbled at the piano. “There were always instruments in our house”.
He began teaching himself guitar at the age of nine, playing saxophone in band at the age of ten and took his first piano lessons in highschool. Even in theses early years, he was creating his own music. “I remember writing little instrumentals”.
In college, he joined jazz band and focused on the piano as his primary instrument but never stopped nurturing a love for saxophone and guitar.
He spent the following years playing sax & keys with various cover bands while finishing his degree in music.
While playing in Tequila Mockingbird, one of those cover bands that played in the valley back in the nineties, a local reporter wrote a review on the band and had this to say about Zeke’s performance in the group, “Tequila Mockingbird is a diverse band, offering the audience a choice of songs from different styles of music instead of the usual classic rock variety. Mockingbird achieves this mainly through Zeke Aguilar’s sax…Tequila Mockingbird makes use of Aguilar’s sax for jazz and blues.”
It is this diversity that Zeke still brings into his music.
Eclectic, his freshman offering is a blend of jazz, blues and adult contemporary music. And as mentioned earlier, Zeke still makes use of the sax for jazz and blues. Each song comes from personal experiences, thoughts & emotions.
Zeke has this to say about himself, “Ever since I was a kid, I have loved writing songs and music. I’ve felt most useful in those moments when a song is coming together.”
Zeke lives in Brownsville, Texas and teaches elementary music in San Benito (home to Freddy Fender). He continues to write music, surf, sail, gig and works hard at being a good parent.
