Guitar-driven dark indie pop / "emoetal pop" with ornate vocal harmonies.

10 MP3 Songs
ROCK: Psychedelic, POP: Power Pop

Details:
The Color Guard''s third release layers ornate madrigal harmonies over addictive metal guitar riffs with spikes of wit to create a distinctive sound that can only be summed up by the album''s title: Dark Pop. The record yields outstanding results when paired with: decorating a cake, making a Halloween costume, grooming your dog, painting your apartment, graphing parabolas, or pimpin'' your ride.

These New York City rockers gleefully pitch together pieces of Heart, Lacuna Coil, Siouxsie, the Mars Volta, the Breeders, the Cocteau Twins, Voivod, Queen and Jefferson Airplane, and light the pile aflame into a bonfire of heavy, trippy melodic glory.

"Transatlantic Void" opens the album begins with a fist-pumping celebration of math and D-tuned guitars. Next a flute leads you Pied-Piper-like into a pseudo-Eastern love song, "Your Kiss is My Command." A grooving pop tune, "In a Hurricane," unfolds like a storm into a prog-rock extravaganza, inspired by the hurricanes that frontwoman Lalena grew up tracking as a pastime on the Texas Gulf Coast. The album morphs and evolves, clipping pictures of a jellyfish, the family dog, and haunting days of Fall, building to an epic conclusion: an over-the-top heartwrencher from Mary Magdalene''s spurned female lover, "The Woman Behind the Woman Behind the Man."

Lalena Fissure came to New York for art school and co-founded The Hissyfits as her thesis project; she moonlights as an anime cartoon. On lead guitar, jovial Josh Zisman spins his head around to bust out his alternate personality as a psychedelic werewolf that just escaped from Berklee. Demonstrative Caryn Havlik creates high drama as a liontamer behind her drumkit, each piece of which she has affectionately named. And keeping the peace is the curiously baroque bassist, fellow Midwesterner Jeanne Gilliland, whose name is derived from that of her great-grandmother Glinda the Good Witch of Oz.

The Color Guard''s sophomore album Speech for Heated Hearts received praise from Entertainment Weekly and four stars from https://www.tradebit.com. Both albums and their debut EP have been released on their own Suziblade Music label.
