Details:
Andrew E. Postell a native of Birmingham, Alabama began his musical career at the tender age of eight. When he entered his band director’s room the instructor could see he had a student who had a rare musical talent. Mr. Charles Price, band instructor for W. C. Davis Elementary School of Birmingham, could see this child’s gift of having a musical ear. Mr. Price made Andrew a member of his marching band. Andrew’s instrument was the trombone. His favorite class in school was band. There was not a note or a move he could not master. He became one of Mr. Price’s star pupils. He continued his public school matriculation at the Carol W. Hayes High School. Andrew became a part of the marching “Pacesetters”. He was one student who was never late, difficult, or disrespectful. He was taught by his mother at an early age, “if you are going to do something you had better do it good”. Andrew was a rare bred in high school because he could play an instrument, do his schoolwork and play football. He was known on the field for “hitting them hard”. But, his love for music had a stronger calling than football. He could not practice or take lessons as much as he wanted to because his mother simply could not afford music lessons. He continued to practice when he could and listen in on the music classes at the school.

During, his senior year he had to take a part-time job to pay for senior expenses and to help his mother with finances. Andrew was a hard worker. He performed odd jobs, worked on cars and did lawn care to make extra money. He continued his secret love for music by playing whatever instrument he could put his hands on in his spare time. His mother could see that her son was missing something, music. She watched him go to school, work and help out at the house without complaining. His mother wanted more for her children than one could dream! She wanted her children to be able to live their dreams and reach unlimited heights. But, the family needed money! The children had to work! Andrew had graduation right around the corner, senior fees had to be paid. He worked tirelessly and effortlessly to do what he had to do. His mother saw before her very eyes a young boy becoming a humble man.

Andrew’s mother was the first person to invest in his musical talent. She decided to reward him for his hard work and dedication. His mother went to a local pawnshop and bought him his first bass for $35.00 and a small amplifier for $40.00. Andrew was excited to learn that his mother recognized his true passion, the bass. His familiarity with the bass clef made it easy for him to learn the bass. He was able to learn from listening to music. Andrew always had an entrepreneur spirit. He decided to make his mother’s gift work for him. At the age of sixteen he started playing for churches. He and some friends would play for their local church every Sunday. Later, other churches started hearing about the boys and offered them additional opportunities to play. He was good, but not as good as he wanted to be. He bought books on playing the bass. But, he became frustrated with his inability to play the way he wanted to play. He put the bass down for a while and focused on working.

After Andrew heard the music of Abraham Laborielle, he was inspired to pick up his bass again. At nineteen he realized that his desire for the bass was still alive within him. Andrew married and became a father of three beautiful daughters. He went to vocational school and became a graphic artist. This degree led him to become a teacher in the Birmingham City School System. He taught students his trade by day and practiced his bass at night. This detour in life did not deter him from his real dream. He became more committed and dedicated to learning all he could about the bass. This self-taught bass player became the reason to visit many local churches where he played and often performed solos. He became known as a distinguishing bassist, composer, arranger and producer. Birmingham had a new musical genius that simply enjoyed playing music.
He is able to make his bass sing!

In later years, the artists that would have an influence on his musical style were artists such as Stanley Clark and Marcus Miller. In between teaching, working a part-time job, and being a father, he practiced the bass. Andrew has performed concerts throughout the United States. He has shared the stage with artists such as Shirley Caesar, Katie Sankey and The Williams Brothers. He toured extensively with the A. H. Parker High School Concert Choir under the direction of the late Dr. Perry Anderson. He has performed with several popular touring gospel plays. Andrew is currently playing with the Force 5 Band and Show, on staff with Sixth Avenue and the Greater Shiloh Baptist Churches.

Andrew’s unique style of playing has lead him to a seven string bass along with a five string fretted and a five string fretless bass. Andrew is a gentle caring spirit who gives of his time and talent for charitable events. He has performed for festivals, concerts and benefits. He cannot be labeled for any one style of music. He has played in almost every conceivable genre of music. Andrew has become known as one of the best bassist in the area with a style that is inimitably his own.

This living legend is fulfilling his longtime dream of ultimately recording some of his music with the release of his debut CD titled” The Time Has Come”. This solo project reflects his veracity, depth and versatility. Listeners will be entertained with his electrifying performance that exudes with love of the bass. Andrew’s effortless rhythmic innovations set a new benchmark for musicians everywhere. His CD represents pride, class and sophistication. His performance is perfect! He gives just enough on this Cd to have music lovers asking for more!
