BIOGRAPHY by Laurence Phelan:

''Magnetic Sideways Pull'' is the extraordinarily affecting debut album written, performed, arranged and produced by the 27 year-old singer-songwriter Drew Pilgram. It nearly didn''t happen. "I was going to give up on it and just move somewhere peaceful and warm, where I could happily keep on writing songs and play my guitar just for myself." But just as she was about to put that plan into action, she was offered a record contract. "I knew that signing at that time wasn''t right, because I wanted creative control over my music and no limitations, but it did force me to think about what I wanted from the rest of my life. So I bought a computer and locked myself away for three months to write and record. I immersed myself in this lovely creative bubble, all day and every day, which I only came out of to eat or sleep, and sometimes not even then! I loved every second of it."

The result is a set of moving songs whose directness and honesty is matched by subtle, unshowy production. Songs that draw on blues, gospel, country and r&b, but that, really, are confident enough just to be themselves. And it was typical of this really quite head-strong woman, who lives, breathes and dreams music. You wouldn''t know it to hear the controlled, soft and siren-like qualities of her voice, and measured, thoughtful bent of her lyrics, but if she isn''t playing music, Drew is one of those people who just can''t keep still. "I''ve got a lot of energy, and a lot of thoughts constantly racing through my head. Writing a song is my therapy. It''s where I get to try and make sense of all the craziness that''s in there, in my life, and in the world."

Drew moved around a lot when she was young, and doesn''t feel like she''s from anywhere in particular. She left home at 16 in search of adventures and like-minded people. But her musical roots are in Manchester, where she lived with her aunty for a while – an inspirational junior school teacher and self-taught steel drummer - and years later, when she was 18, got a job in a back street recording studio. She''d been writing songs since she was 12 but it was here that she began to hone her craft, and got her first objective response to that characterful, versatile and special voice of hers. "I had to put down a guide vocal for a song I''d written for another artist. I made the guys in the studio go down the pub because I lacked confidence in my vocal ability, but they tricked me into thinking they''d left. When I was done they burst into the room and insisted I record the final version of the song." After that she taught herself some keys and bass to go with her skill as a guitarist, and bought an old 8-track with which to develop the harmonies that make her songs so textured and warm.

She''s done lots more living and loving since then. And she''ll admit there were times when she was younger when she was "a bit off the rails". But it isn''t the life an artist has led that matters, it''s the artistry with which she writes about that life that makes her songs interesting, and gives them the power to move people. "The music I love listening to is the music I can relate to, and when that happens I feel completely overwhelmed by the connection with another human being. And that''s the effect I want my songs to have. I want to communicate with other people on the clearer, deeper level that you can only get to with good music."

And that''s just what she''s done. This is an album that contains sadness, anger and bitterness, but also optimism and happiness. An album that feels strongly, aches quietly, and smiles sweetly. But whether they''re about love, sex and relationships; loss and pain; the state of the world; or just the ups, downs, ins and outs of everyday life, Drew''s songs are characterised by their humanity, honesty, approachability, and by the kind of sideways look at things that makes you think, "oh yeah, that is just what it''s like to be human and to be alive. I see it now. And when you put it like that…". It''s an album that takes you to one side, and pulls you in. Magnetic Sideways Pull.
